A friend of mine on disability with severe memory issues was just scammed, twice. First for $250 and then $650. A browser lock-up and 'virus warning pop up and call this number for support.' On a computer not worth 300 bucks new, freely giving them his credit card details.
Two consecutive Microsoft support scams, India accents.
It's like so far away from my reality because I instantly recognized it for what it was when he started telling me about the computer issues he had, and so now happened to a friend, and whatever I say, he does still think the second time ($650) really was Microsoft guys, showing him all the things the other help-desk missed, again remotely accessed.
Sigh... |

yeah it sucked and its a kind of powerless feeling.
The move of this topic kind of sucks too, as the people I intended it to read and have been communicating with on the forum, don't visit this forum part, at all. |

Then it's their fault.
Conveniently enough, there is a nice button that says "View posts since last visit." Using that allows you to see all new posts.

Why not refer your friend to Microsoft's own alert about support scams?

We have the same here in Malta. First time I almost got scammed to my embarrassment. They call from "windows" or "microsoft" with an Indian accent and ask you to turn off reporting services to stop sending "error messages to their server". Gladly I had a sober moment in my hangover and got the hang of it. Many others have been scammed, especially older people. |
