My lad thinks I've paid him via Moneygram, but I told him I'ld put the documents in the post. Obviously he wants the 8 digit number, but is asking for the tracking number too. Of course I have many ways I could answer:

1) Sorry, what do you mean by tracking number?
2) The post office here does not give tracking numbers unless one pays extra, and this MG payment has already cost me more than I expected due to poor exchange rate
3) Give him a fake tracking site.

I don't think this guy is such an idiot as some I've had in the past. He realizes my 070 Flextel number is a personal number, so did not dial it. Other lads seem ignorant that dialing my number will cost them big time. This guy seems more clued up.

Anyway, are there any sites where I can fake a tracking number. It would be nice to have it held up in customs a long time. As someone who has had that annoyance when buying from abroad, it would be nice to dish some of that out

There is no tracking code for regular mail. Your boy seems to think you sent it registered or maybe they really believe that USPS tracks every single envelope in the system. They do well to stay above board, much less track mails for knuckleheads like your boy.

Despite the first and most important scam baiting rule "let the lad do the work": perhaps you could make up a fake receipt showing the logo of the postal service (or a courier service like "Runaway International") of that country you pretend to have sent the letter from? - This could be handwritten, just "1 letter, 35 gram, postage (your currency) XX.XX, recipient address.......", with a nice postal stamp. Gimp could help you with this.

Another way could be (following your idea of holding up the letter in customs) your "sender's copy" of the international customs declaration CN 22 or CN 23. Such forms you can get at any post office or even for download from your domestic postal service web site.

But, since you sent the MG document just as a letter, you don't have a track number, just the receipt showing the postage, or your copy of the CN22/CN23.

The lad is now trying to phone me - but keeps getting a recorded message, so I'm eating up his money on my expensive 0701 private number.
