After 1 month of baiting a UN ATM scammer, I finally got a bank account out of him. The account originates in Tulsa, Okla, USA. It has been reported to Alan. Is it likely the account holder is involved in the scam or has the scammer somehow obtained the bank account info? If money was theoretically deposited into the account in what manner would the scammer get the money out of the account? |

Bank accounts may belong to accomplices, but they also frequently belong to innocent victims.
Innocent victims are usually recruited through 2 paths:
-Job scams. The victim responds to an ad on craigslist, or a job site, or the scammer contacts people who have posted a resume or job wanted ads online.
Most often the "job" will be marketed as some kind of payment collection job (with excuses about taxes or something similar to explain why a middle man is needed). Sometimes it will be a bogus "personal assistant" job. Either way, the job duties involve receiving transfers, then withdrawing and wiring them to the scammer. Some scammers will add bogus online or (on rare occasion) phone interviews, tests, and/or contracts to make the job seem more realistic.
-Romance scams. The scammer may be playing an overseas soldier, or he will be working in a foreign country and for some reason has limited access to his own account, so a hooked victim will be asked to receive money for him--he may claim the money is his pay, or money owed to him by a friend, or he may claim that he owes money to someone, and she needs to transfer it for him.
That is one reason that you can't assume that a bank account is closed because it was reported--bank accounts belonging to innocent victims may be monitored or otherwise managed without closing. (Plus some banks will not respond at all, or until there is a very large number of complaints against a specific account. |

Thanks for the info. Is there anything else I should be doing to get this account investigated or closed? Obviously my character will have multiple problems trying to deposit funds into this account. |

Don't let your character have too many different problems with this one account - save some of your problems for the next one, and the one after that...... |
