Today it is Midsommarafton. A Swedish tradition where we celebrate the light part of the year. We do this in the traditional way.

Dancing around what is a symbol of a huge c**k. Mostly it is the young and their parents that dance, and the mentally deranged. We normal people do more adult things and can't be bothered with prancing around a green erect penis. So we get hammered instead. And that is what i am going to do tomorrow. Into the mist.

I think you may have it backwards, though. Get hammered first, THEN dance around <strike>with an</strike> the erect penis. Wink

We do something similar at Beltane with a Maypole. We affix long ribbons to the top, plant it in a hole, and weave around. If you're hammered there's always the bonus of getting all out of sync and winding up tied to the pole by the wrapping of all of the ribbons. If you have kind friends, they won't leave you there for long before cutting you free. (Fortunately, I have kind friends. Laughing

)

The Maypole seems more fun. And alcohol is a good excuse for actually doing the dance.
I don't know what you mean by Swedish cupcakes but the main thing about midsommar (midsummer) is good food. Especially pickled herring and potatoes are consumed along with nubbe (shots of strong alcohol). And even though cupcakes aren't associated with midsommar i assume that many eat large quantities of those as well.

And PF, booze are definitely involved. I'm nut 100% sure but i think that this may be the number one drinking day of the year in Sweden.

Here, we celebrate Midsummer (Or Saint Hans Eve, Hans being the Danish form of Johannes or John the Baptist) as well. But we don't have a May Pole... it's June, fer cryin' out loud (crazy Swedes).

Instead, we sing patriotic songs, get shitfaced and have bonfires on which we burn witches....

Not drink? I don't understand, why would anyone do that?

I think most people do celebrate with friend and family. And those few that doesn't are probably lonely or simply not interested.

And we Swedes used to have our fair share or burning witches as well. In the late 1600. But not as much as many other countries and probably way less then the crazy Danes.

In Spain we just celebrated San Juan (Saint John's Day), a catholic feast created to cover the pagan celebration of the Summer solstice, it involves drinking and jumping over bonfires, two deaths this year, one burned and one drowned Rolling Eyes

Our town in Maine had the Solstice fest in downtown. The police shut down Main St. to car traffic, everybody wanders up and down the street, buy food from vendors, watch local musicians, and just socialize I guess. Later on the usual booze hounds hit our local taverns.

Police use the opportunity to arrest people they know that have outstanding warrants.

It's better than where I lived in So. Cal where they did...well nothing.
