Know what I think. I think he found someone else to do the transfer. That is the real reason for the current “honesty”. I would confront him about this.

In real life, I've seen many scam artists miraculously grow a conscience once they know the jig is up. Usually they're just sorry that they got caught, but some of them really are sorry. In real life, they're often forgiven and let off with a stern warning, even though they'll likey try to scam again.

But this isn't real life.
