Had dinner with some friends the other night. The single members of the group started talking about dating horror stories. One in particular really caught us off guard. My friend gave me permission to mention it here (without names...)

Several years ago she started talking with a "nice man" on a dating site. Ended up going to meet him. Once in his country, he took her passport. Her family tried to get law enforcement there involved, but she was considered "property". It took her family months, and the involvement of the embassy to get her home. She was lucky (if that can be said) to escape with only a few broken ribs.

After hearing her story, I'm redoubling my efforts on these scumbags. Evil or Very Mad

That is terrible! I'm glad she was rescued before anything worse happened. Please thank your friend for sharing her story with us, she's very brave.

That should be a sticky/mandatory reading on all dating sites.

Are you able to say which country it happened in?

Lobo, I'm sorry to hear about your friend - it must have been a terrifying experience.

On a baiting level, though, I think we've got to differentiate between those people who have a different culture/expectation than our own (or those who are just 'bad people' in our own opinion) and those that are definitely scammers.

A religious or cultural view of the world (or women!) that we see as 'wrong', is not the same thing as a man who sends out hundreds or thousands of emails in order to trick women into sending him money.

There are a lot of mean people in the world, and there are a lot of people whose viewpoints/attitudes we may totally disagree with. There are also liars, and manipulators. And yes, as Cougar says, a warning about all those would not go amiss!

But for baiting, and maybe especially with contacts from dating sites, we do need to make sure that it is scammers we are baiting .... and not just Bad Men.
