Why is gmail the prefered baiting email provider?

Ive heard its more secure... is this true? If so why?

More than anything else, it strips your IP. I don't know that it's necessarily more secure than other services though.

Plus the way it "threads" emails and uses labels, instead of folders, can be handy organizational tools (making it much easier to publish your baits later, if nothing else) Smile

But really, I would say it's a lot of personal preference. Some scammers are skittish of "gma1l j0kers," and some baiters prefer yahoo for just that reason.

Gmail offers a generous amount of storage space as well.

Fastmail and Hushmail (there are others) also hide your IP address but you do need to use the webmail interface for this feature to work. Neither of these providers are as generous in terms of storage.

As SSA mentioned, none of them are more 'secure' than any other. Just be careful what (e.g. email signature information) you could inadvertently leak to a lad.

Best of all: you can use tags and pretend you are different people within an organization:

your.church+ministry @ gmail
your.church+secretary @ gmail.com
your.church+priest @ gmail.com

Add names and set "Reply from the same address the message was sent to" - scambaiting never been easier! Thumbs up

As far as 'security' goes, with Gmail stripping your IP your lad won't know what country you are in, and that pretty much narrows it down.

If you are concerned then try doing a track on your own IP and see where it points to.

Even with this information, couple with the motivation for retribution, any course of action is essentially rendered useless.

I just prefer Gmail over any other free email service. Plus, if you're using Firefox it works great with the Gmail Manager Add-on. In fact, I think that add-on alone is reason enough to use Gmail. Wink

As for IPs... yes, Gmail does remove your IP if you send emails from the webmail system, but then again if you've given someone no other information than what city you're in through your IP what's the danger? I suppose it could blow your bait if you're claiming to be from somewhere else, but over 99% of the time lads won't check your IP, let alone know how or what it really is. And if they do I'd bet you could explain it away. Very Happy

Part of Gmail privacy policy is they do not include your IP address in the Email headers. This makes baiters feel safe. That is the number on reason Gmail is preferred.

There are other Email provider's that don't include your IP address in the headers but the storage capacity on these are very small. Gmails storage capacity is 7.3 GB and growing.

There are many benefits to gmail over other mail providers, though I personally use a wide variety for my many personalities.

yahoo.com will clear out your old mails and shut your addie if you don't use it regularly which means that you could lose your record of old baits unless you back them up. gmail don't do that.

Google applications allow you to operate spreadsheets and many other useful gizmos in association with your addie, which can be helpful to store associated details and attachments.

Google have a nice free website building option, which isn't spectacular, but good enough to fool a Lad and easy enough for anyone to set up. You can use google analytics to view stats on the site.

You can use a google account to send mails through other mailboxes and to receive mail from those same boxes. You have to be careful as you can do it with any other gmail box but only some yahoo ones. Yahoo.fr you can but not yahoo.com.

If you use several characters in a bait it's best to have them using different mail providers. I'd start off with gmail and then add others a and when you need them.
