I've received one volunteer PM, and there are two people here who would like to give it a go, so can I suggest the following:

The Baiter's Cup Pre-Tournament Tournament

Round 1:

Ramsey VS TheFae
Lad selector: Scammy Scameroo

Scammy Scameroo VS Branwen
Lad selector: Ramsey

Round 2:
EITHER
Winner of round 1 VS Winner of round 2
OR
Concept abandoned amidst a flurry of swearing

This means we'll have 4 threads on the go- one for each bait- plus obviously this one for general discussion. Is that OK with the mods? I'll take silence as a "yes". Wink

Also, does two weeks for the trial run sound OK?

This should be enough to either bludgeon the idea into shape or bury it deeper than even a conspiracy theorist could imagine, depending on whether it turns out to be bollocks.

Dude, don't start 4 thread, it's damn confusing. Each person post their emails here. eg. I would start a post and keep editing up with updates.

Ah, I already started a thread for our heat. I thought it was a good idea to keep the baits separate from general discussions... and then edit the first post to add a poll when the two weeks are up. You're right that we don't need 4, though, that's overkill...

What lad are you two working with?

Yeah, they couldn't wait! Doesn't matter, it's only a proof-of-concept... I'd picked out an ace lad though, her father had been mysteriously murdered and she'd been taken in by her uncle, but then gone on the run. Sounded like the plot for an episode of Columbo!

I was thinking that for each heat, someone who isn't involved in that heat should pick the lad- just one that sounds interesting or fun, or a little different from the norm. Obviously, if a hitlad comes up, those are ace, so I would hope he would be picked!

I'm tempted to suggest a "no lotto or cheque lads" rule- but I don't want to tie things down too much. I sure as hell wouldn't pick one, though.

Based on how the dry run is progressing, I'm starting to wonder if two weeks is actually a better timescale than one month. It adds to the pressure a little, as you've got to get as much done in the time as possible, and that already made me rush the first steps and nearly lose the bait- which is, of course, more exciting. We'll see how it shapes up as we get closer to the deadline.

It's also looking like the "post every email sent or received" thing works well, too, with one heat per thread. Although the Ramsey vs TheFae dry run seems to have gone a bit wrong.

Does anyone else have any thoughts on how it's gone so far, and/or any suggestions regarding the tournament structure or organisation?

Scammy, I agree with you about the two weeks idea.

I initially thought that two weeks was too short for 'the real thing' (though fine for a dry run), but now I think it is better. It does add pressure.

For example, the No-Contraceptives-Lad did not reply to my character's mail yesterday. Normally, my character (laid back chap that he is) wouldn't be at all concerned about this, and, indeed, show his non-concern by doubly delaying his reply to the Lad's next mail when he did write.

But there's not time in two weeks to play those games. (Well, not unless I want you to dominate every post with all your baiting letters, while I am seemingly dead or absent or struggling!)

So instead of just sitting there - merrily writing to other Lads instead - due to the two-week thing, today I shall write again to the Lad, and prompt a reaction by what I shall say.

Which absolutely gives it more a feel of a 'competition' rather than merely 'baiting in public'.

I've been absent for a bit (close to a month or so) but this is certainly some good stuff to come back to. I'm in!

The only point about this is that if you start with, say 20 baiters, you'll have a 'first round' that lasts for (16/2)*2 weeks (8 heats * 2 weeks) = 16 weeks. And then those that move on go into a second round that lasts for 4 * 2 weeks = 8 weeks. Then 2 heats of 2 weeks is another 4 weeks and then your finale. That means that for one tournament, you'll need 16 + 8 + 4 = 28 weeks to get to the start of your finale. Let's say that you'll then hold a 4-6 week finale, you'll be spending half a year on one tournament starting with (only) 16 players.
And I don't really see multiple heats running at the same time going very well... Because people do need to have the time to read 'm all if you want them to vote for the winner...
When running multiple heats at the same time I foresee readers dropping out because they can't keep up...
That is the only reason why this could possibly fail as far as I can see. Still, I can't wait for this to start. Count me in!

You're right, I don't think running loads of heats at once would work at all... especially if you get many people with the kind of email volume I churn out!

My original thought was just running the whole first round at once, but that's clearly madness. I think for the first round you could probably manage two at a time? That would cut 8 weeks off the round duration, and bring the whole thing down to under half a year. The voting periods could easily overlap the running heats early on, but not in the semis... although that's not going to slow things down too much.

It's definitely an interesting way to bait. It's always good to use up a lot of lad time, but when you know you're also stopping him from interacting with your opponent it gives you an extra incentive! I imagine The Mangler could be pretty devastating, used correctly, but there's a big risk that he would spend no time on it at all- especially if the other baiter can tempt him with some easier money. I'm loving the effect the time-limit is having too- I've trotted out a month's worth of bullshit in five days!

a. Time to look for participants for the first baiters cup. Volunteers are hard to come up, so I am concerned is we are ever gonna get 8 participants

b. We have to find 4 lads and fatten them for the cup. Then we won't have problems of 'no replies'

I've had quite a few volunteers, I'm not at all worried about finding 8 people!

El Sid has a fantastic (categorised) catcher account, which he's offered to pick some un-surplussed lads from for us. I agree that it's a good idea to quickly ping them beforehand though, to make sure they're still active- something I didn't have chance to do with the Gold Dust lad currently being used, unfortunately! I do hope he's still around...

I was planning to organise and start the first Baiter's Cup pretty soon (after the voting for the dry run closed) but now there's another one running I think I should probably wait!

Running this as a full tournament is likely to run into various problems, since many people fade in and out of the baiting scene as RL intervenes, so any long running tournament is bound to have its dropouts. That said, I think it's still worth trying, limiting concurrent action to one or two pairs at once. Otherwise I think individual matchup threads will get less attention from nonparticipants.

Two week limit is great, of course there's nothing to stop a baiter from continuing after the competition is done.
