Serious question about chest pain I'm having.

I know this isn't a medical forums...but I have a concern.

Okay, I usually don't freak out, but in the last 30 mins I have had 4 sharp pains in my chest. It's late and don't want to spook my family.

It feels like an electrical shock type burst across my chest from arm to arm that lasts about 2 secs. I already looked up heart attack symptoms just in case. I am in my mid 40's and smoke so that's why my concern. I've had some weird pressure on the right side of my chest the last 3 days but I don't have any other signs.

Any clues or should I be going to the hospital?

"Seek medical aid immediately" is one of those phrases that comes to mind.

I just called the local hospital and they said they can't give any medical advise even as to what my symptoms may be. Its against policy.

I think I best be going because I have having more of those at quicker intervals.

I will let you know how I make out.

Please let us know how it turns out. Unexpected chest pain is not something to take lightly when you're a middle-aged smoker.

Okay, I'm outta here. I notified my family. The pains spurts are getting shorter in span. I had 3 more since last post , one while talking to my parents.

Hey everyone, I'm back...............Excuse me as I don't know much about medical stuff. Never really had to go to a doc or hospital much.

They took me immediatly in when I got there , no registering info or anything.

Well I had about 20 or so more pains while in ER. They have became more mild, but still very mild hints are there. Results show everything normal, though my potassium was low they said. They gave me potassium stuff for that. They just released me.

They really aren't sure whats causing it. I have to schedule a stress test. Not really sure what thats for, though Ive heard of them.

So it seems I'm alright....just got a little more worried since my age and all now.

*EDIT* Oh they drew blood, IV, did EKG I think its called(bunch of wires), chest x-rays and had other machines monitoring me. I can't remember all of it...just they did a lot.

Thanks A SKYHOOK, like I said, still having mild ones but not as often or serious. Maybe about once every 20 mins now. They said it could be possible something to do with my muscles since my potassium was low. I really don't know much about it all to be honest.

I haven't been to a hospital or seen a doc since 2004 and that was for a torn rotator cuff and operation. Before that, maybe 1994?

Again, I apologize if I worried anyone, that wasn't my intention. It's just when your a bachelor and really don't have anyone in your life except for family and the fact it was midnight when I posted (not wanting to call and wake my parents)....well I guess sometimes one can worry themselves. Only reason I made this post.

Uhm, I'm sure B8Rs have a good idea as to where bananas come into play with lads.... They told me bananas and green leafy veggies. Honestly, I didn't know green veggies had potassium in them.

Chest pains like that are best diagnosed by professionals
though for my tuppence worth my son had pains like that before Christmas
Fit , skinny , vegetarian, non smoking , teenager
He'd damaged the muscles between his ribs, rest anti inflammitories and a the last week of school helped

I had similar many years ago, a shooting pain up my left arm and down left side.
I eventually went to the docs and he diagnosed it as neurosis and proscribed valium which I refused and that taught me a valuable lesson in life.

Never worry about a problem you can't do anything about

I found out last year that it's a good idea to be seeing a doctor every now and then, regardless of whether or not you have a rotator cuff that's out of whack.

Last year I went in to get my left shoulder looked at, and well, thru a blood test done just for good measure I found out that I had some other things to be concerned about.

They're under control now and my next visit is later this month.

^^^Amazing coincidences. I had rotator surgery in 2004, and then a problem with my left shoulder. It was a grade 3 separation after a bike crash that the surgeon was not interested in last year. He was more concerned with my BP, put me on 3 meds, one a potassium saving diuretic and I have my next visit later this month.

^^^ I completely sheared one muscle and partial another while on a motorcycle in August of 04 and surgery exactly one month to the day later in September. Prior to that in 2003 I went to a specialist because I had problems with my arms. Right was worse than left. It was exactly as I thought.... tennis elbow both arms.

Tried to get the same surgeon that did my rotator to do the tennis elbow also, but said it was too much for one operation. So still to this day both my hands occasionally go numb through-out the day. Plus riding my motorcycle doesn't help, right hand goes numb a lot when riding.

Last year my left shoulder has started bothering me. I'm sure it's not torn though. Then this year the right shoulder that I had operated on has been bothering me considerably.

I guess age takes it's toll eventually.
