In real life, I'm pretty well into theology. So when I met my first 'Rev Father', I couldn't resist raising a few theological issues. Three weeks later, it is almost like we have forgotten the scam (almost like - whoops, was that his bank account I just reported?) and are deep within theological discussions.
I am not stupid. I know this lad will go along with anything as long as there is a payout for him at the end of it. I also know full well that he is no priest, but exactly the same person as the poor young woman suffering in the refugee camp. And, if he really believed the Bible he was referring to, no way would he be doing what he is doing. It is all a means to an end. And I have a very good reason to detest all scammers, and, I repeat, I am not stupid.
But, at the same time, actually, he is helpful. At times (and I am not stupid about theology either - honestly, just believe me on that, no further detail forthcoming), I'm going 'Oh wow! You're right!' about things he says.
So - what I want to ask is: How do other people get their heads around a person whose method of making a living one absolutely despises ... while also realising that they are quite helpful human beings?
I'm coping. I'm messing him up left, right, and centre. But, regarding things he has said, I'm also inclined to thank him.
(My character both thanks him AND strings him along. It is just a mental thing, going on in my head.) |

Being married helps...
But seriously, all people are flawed, and it is not a black and white issue to say a person is evil/good. I enjoy the occasional mental sparring with lads about grander issues, but in the end, they are scammers, and that's the bottom line to me. Sure I'm jaded, but that's a good thing in this hobby!
Good luck in your bait! |

It's quite simple, Utter and complete detachment, We know what they want, and we also know they will have no scruples what so ever about getting it. It's our job to delay that for as long as possible, and if we have to stoop just a bit lower then them, well so be it..
But your bible thing, could last for weeks, so it's well worth pursuing, and remember, while he's writing to you, he's not writing to some poor sod who he intends to rip off. |

@ Branwen - Welcome to Eater! Just realize one thing...the lads only look up all their bible quotes online. They do not believe one word of it, nor live it in any way, shape or form. Lately, I've found success playing a Voudou hounganin Tina & Joe's Safari, and talking with the spirits of their ancestors.
You can really mess around with their heads, and "tell them what is right and wrong" straight from dead grandfather or dead grandmother. Some of it they will believe and you can make them do things or scare the crap out of them this way. But even this, in the end, will not change them one bit. When given the choice of forgiveness and redemption by giving all the scam money waiting for them at the bank, and keeping it and staying bad, they will always choose to keep the cash.
Enjoy getting into your lad's head, but remember lads always lie. |

Thank you for responding. I think I'm guilty of sub-consciously expecting baddies to always be recognisably bad.
Maybe my best psychological adjustment is to realise that those lads who show they are willing to think about subjects and issues and come up with thoughtful replies (I can tell, with this one, what are his own conclusions, not just lifted off the net, and he is genuinely enjoying the discussion, I think, endlessly mailing my character out of turn just to elaborate further) are actually the most dangerous, because they may be more difficult for a real victim to spot.
So all the more reason to spin along forever the ones with sensible opinions. |
