Also, quite surprisingly, I got an e-mail today informing me that someone with my exact name apparently died in Singapore 20 years ago and I can get all the money he left there:

So a short message back from a safe email address should make clear that you might be a possible victim.

This particular bit of good news came to my primary personal inbox......the spam filter caught it, but after listening to the show, I've become curious about all this and decided to read it instead of just deleting it automatically.

I get a dozen of these things a day, sometimes more, between my personal and business inboxes. I guess I need to set up a "catcher" box.

I've asked for a mentor as per advice from one of your senior members.

If it was sent to your personal box then, reply to it from a new, safe email address. Just copy and paste the message and reply (you don't even have to do that much -- the lad will still be eager to reply to you).

Glad to see you have requested a mentor. Get yourself a safe Gmail account and then just forward any suitable ones there for some attention. Lads sent hundreds, if not thousands of spamming mails so they won't suspect any shenanigans. Just copy either original email into your opening reply.

Are there any issues with the I.P. address being traced back to my computer? (I use a Mac) I can set up Gmail or hotmail or lycos fairly easily, but total anonymity is a key component, que no?

^^Very few lads know what an IP is or how to check it. It also depends on what your IP reveals about you. More than likely, it does not pinpoint you. That said, it is very easy to remain anonymous, so you might as well. Gmail and Hotmail both strip your true IP, I'm not sure about Lycos.

A word of advice, edit the above post and amend your email address. Lads often paddle into these murky waters and fish for info that will ID us. There isnt too much they can do with what you posted, but we dont tend to let them have any details at all without a damn good fight.

Ive checked the mentor thread and cant see any post from you applying for a mentor, so I assume you sent it to Cherrie via PM.

Your best course of action here is to start very tentatively. Ask questions (preferably one at a time, lads love that), request more info, enquire about the legitimacy of it all. Simply buy some time and await your mentor for a more hands on approach.

Keep things very slow and pace your replies until help arrives. As a fresh fish, its bound to get the better of you and you'll be keen to shoot back at every email host haste, but believe me, lads simply LOVE to wait for your replies Wink

If help hasnt arrived soon (it can sometimes be a little while, but the mods work hard to fix people up with mentors and will accomodate you asap), my guess is you will get a script response giving more details about the deal and possibly asking for some personal info. My advice then would be to wait maybe a day or 2, then ask a question. Ask 2 at a push. Victims are naturally cautious and your not doing anything out of the ordinary by doing so. Ignore his requests for details for now, dont even mention the fact that you know he brought it up.
