I have been involved in the fabulous sport of scambaiting for a few months now, mainly concentrating on romance scams as that is what brought me here in the first place. I am no expert on any of this but I do know the basics.
A neighbour of mine earlier today had told my wife about the car they had just purchased online from a Brittish woman which had not been delivered as promised, as my wife told me more of the details it became clearer as to what had happened and unfortunately a struggling family has just taken out a loan for a touch under $10,000 to pay for this car that they will not see.
I have had a few of the emails forwarded to me which I have posted below

>From the begining you have to know that for the payment I request ONLY secure pay, I prefer the payment to be done using eBay services.
We will use a safe payment method because I am affiliated at eBay and I have a purchase protection account for $20.000. The final price that I want for this car is AU$8800 including shipping and handling.

As I said I am certainly no expert at scambaiting but I do know enough to realise what has gone on, I have given my neighbours the sad reality that they are unlikely to see their money or car and I have directed them to various places for victim support in Australia as well as a link to report it to the authorities.
What I would like to know is what information any of you may be able to give my neighbours in regards to what has happened, who has done it (I am presuming Lads by the way they write), chances if any of their money being recovered (I realise there is virtually no chance of this but I ask anyway), but most importantly, what is the best way to inflict pain and misery on the scumbags.
I know virtually nothing of killing fake sites or if that is the best course but I notice the email address is one that is good to kill
I intend on giving the neighbours a link this topic, so they can see what has gone on from the experts
Finally, I know what the first question back to me will be, and that is 'can I include the header?' If i work out how, or if somebody can give a computer illiterate lessons on how, or if somebody wants to PM me so I can forward some emails, then yes I will post it.
Thanks in advance, you are all worth more money |

Firstly, has the money been picked up? Check the tracking number here: https://wumt.westernunion.com/asp/orderStatus.asp?country=global If it has not been collected, your neighbours need to get it recalled NOW! If it has, I am afraid there is no chance of getting it back, and all I can do is offer my commiserations and a warning - your neighbours may be told it can be retrieved for a fee, but that's just another scam.
As for the headers, there is some info here: http://www.scamwarners.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7 about how to read headers (I prefer the second link, but either are good) and the third link shows you a list of email providers and how to find headers for each.
I am sorry for what has happened to your neighbours, but your alertness may have prevented them throwing good money after bad. |

Eight and Luther
Firstly, thanks for your quick responses,
My first question to the neighbours was when did you make the last payment? Monday morning.
Second question to them, have you contacted WU to see if the money has been collected? Yes, last payment collected last night.
I have advised them that there is virtually no chance of seeing their money again and I have also alerted them to the possibility that the scammers may come back for more money and I have suggested some ways that this may be put forward such as a recovery company or an additional fee, I have learnt lots in my time here thanks to some great people, just a pimple on what I hope to learn however.
Headers,
Luther you have made me feel a little smarter as I recently worked out how to post headers but couldn't work out why I could not do it this time, I thought it was just my stupidity, know I know it is just my lack of knowledge and Eight I will study those links and learn for next time I need to include headers.
On to my my other question,
What is the best way to do damage to these bastards
Thanks again |

Bait them til their eyes bleed, or post up the headers here and ask someone else to bait them til their eyes bleed. There is not much chance of tracing them in real life, but I would advise a report to the local police anyway. It will get the crime recorded at least, and the more that are recorded, the better a picture the police get of the scale of the problem.
Did your neighbours use a credit card to pay WU, and do they have any kind of insurance against fraud on their cards? It is worth checking to see whether they might be covered, although the chance is a remote one, I fear. |

Thanks Eight, I will ask the question about how the payment was made.
As to reporting it I have provided a link to the ACCC, (Australian Consumer, Competition, Commission) they are the government body that deals with internet crime here.
As for baiting them, I intend to and hope others here will as well.
I right now will send the neighbours a link to this topic so they can keep up to date with any progress or suggestions.
thanks again |

I'm seeing a variation of this scam on Craigslist. The post will show a nice, low miles car, selling well below market value. Only an email address is given, and the reply states that the scammer is in scottland. They want payment through worldpay.
Email #1 is as follows:
*******************************************
Quote: |
Hello,
Sorry for the delayed response, but I'm in Glasgow (Scotland) right now and I have been very busy.Anyway, thank you for your interest in buying the car. The car is located in US right now and has US papers. Why is the price so low? I am going trough a divorce, and I had to move out of USA I cannot register the car here, as it is made for USA, according to USA standards. So all that I want to do now is to sell the car at this price, because I need to sell it fast(I already made a deposit here to buy me another). The title is clean and you will have absolutely no problems to register the car in the States.
I will tell you a few words about the car..
My 2001 Nissan Maxima with automatic transmission it is in immaculate condition with 80,946 miles and have the VIN number:JN1CA31A21T300659 , rust free , no scratch and hasn't been involved in any accident. The motor runs very well. The interior looks great(NO SMOKING).This car needs nothing,The title is clear ,it is not a salvage one.
I want this transaction to go smoothly enough as I am caught in the middle of some very important events and have little time at my disposal. I already have tones of emails so I hope you understand that I need to sort them out. The car is like new, in perfect conditions, accident free, no scratches, no special marks, no need for additional repairs what so ever. a genuine road runner ready to be yours, but only if you shall understand and you won't make me loose time as it has already happened to me.
Here are all the photos of my car. The pictures are recent, and they were taken right before preparing the car for sale.
The car is exactly as shown in the pictures: http://s195.photobucket.com/albums/z171/2001NissanMaxima/
The price is $2,500 USD THIS IS MY LAST PRICE.I will not negociate the price.I will take in consideration only those buyers who are really interested in buying the car ,to be sure that I don't waist my time with endless discussions. This way,I shall be assured of the serious intentions . So if you are interested please email me back for next step.
Regards !!

Hi again,
Look how we will do this step:
Before leaving I had prearranged shipping and also the payment with WorldPay Company (check www.worldpay.com) so my presence in U.S isn't necessary(The car is loked in a WordPay warehouse Virginia ready for delivery). The the price of car $2,500 includes all the shipping costs and insurance, so you won't have to pay any extra charges.
Here is what I suggest: we will use WorldPay which acts like an escrow service , you make an deposit in an WorldPay managed trust fund ( they hold the money until you receive the car ), I send the car over( the car will be dellivered with the title, owner's manual, 2 sets of keys, service records, and of course the bill of sale notharised and signed by me),you can inspect it, take it to a mechanic to check it out, drive it and then if you decided to keep it, you'll confirm to WorldPay the sale and they will send the payment to me. If, by any reason, you will not be satisfied with it ( even though I can assure you that it is exactly as described), you can return it at my expense for a full refund of your money, no questions asked. I think this is more than fair for the both of us.
If you agree, please provide your full name and shipping address and I will get everything started immediately. Afterwards, WorldPay will invoice you the transaction details and payment instructions. All you will need to do is follow through with their guidelines. I'm looking forward to hear from you.
Thank you, |
*****************************************************
The scammers are using a few email addresses, and sending out similar emails for replies, usually claiming to be in Scotland, but giving different reasons for not being available to sell the vehicle. Here's one email address, I'll see if I can get some more:
*EDIT*
Here are email addys of these scammers:
I'm just going to add more to this post as I find them, in the interest of not overposting, etc... |

We too, were almost caught by this scammer, but it was for a 2004 Toyota Landcruiser 100 series buy now for $9,000(Aus), we luckily didn't send the money, my partner actually tried to check the ebay address that was sent to us, to arrange payment(that address is ebay trust and safety department([email protected]).
Please be warned that this is NOT a ebay site, or anything to do with ebay.
The name and email address for this person is:
Paula Vielman ([email protected])
And the body of her letter is exactly the same as the one you had posted here, just finished the divorce with my husband, when the divorce has finished I own this car. Now as women I don't need, etc. From the begining you have to know that for the payment I request only secure pay, I prefer the payment to be done using ebay services. We will use a safe payment method because I am affillated at ebay and I have a purchase protection account for $20,000. The final price that I want for this car is AU$9,000 including shipping and handling.
We had made frequent requests for a contact phone number etc, but was refused, even asked her to contact us, but to no avail.
We were in the process of organizing the money transfer, (no money was sent luckily) but our shipping details were provided, has there been any reprocussion from just supplying these details?
And who can we contact in regards to this or what sort of process can we take to prevent this from happening to more people?
Thanks. |

These people are wrong and should be STOPPED by all means... as any question in any may way that assist you in abling to stop these scams! |

^^^I am glad you picked up on the warning signs, many people ignore them and lose thousands of dollars to these mongrels.
Are you in any danger as they have your personal details?
No, most of us here go out of our way to waste the time and resources of scammers, we deliberately provoke them and waste not only their time but also their money, for us, yes it would be dangerous for them to have our personal details.
For you no, you are just one of many people who they failed to scam and it will not be worth their while to track you down to harm you, there are others out there to scam and they will simply move on to the next victim.
Simply ignore any future emails from them, by all means post them here to help warn others making sure you remove any personal details of yours from the email, this will help us to bait them.
How to prevent others from being scammed
Spread the word, tell others of your story, notify the ACCC presuming you are in Aus, then read up here, ask for a mentor, learn the ropes, then start baiting away. |

I'd like to encourage froggertoe and icehood to post their stories at our sister site, www.scamwarners.com. The more these frauds are exposed on public fora, the easier it will be for other potential victims to find out about the scam by googling their scammer's name, email address, or format. |

we have received further emails from the so called ebay account holder, and now we have the sellers so called verified address:
First Name: Paula
Last Name: Vielman
Address: 15 Sylva Road
City/Town: Kensington
Zip/postal code: SW7 4DS
Country: United Kingdom
And her so called ebay agent's verified payment details:
First Name: Brudik
Last Name: Larson
Address: 17 Gronant Road
City/Town: Kensington
Zip/postal code: SW7 4DS
Country: United Kingdom
The new emails we received were actually sent to an email address that I have that's not even listed with ebay, in the emails it goes as far as saying that you have 100% sercurity with your details and your payments.
We have photo copies of all the emails we have received, just so we have record of them, what course of action can we take now, to catch these so and so's(could think of a few choice words for these people, but not allowed) I think you understand.
I just thank god that we caught this in time, before we handed over any money.
Thanks Froggartoe. |

Froggartoe and icehood
I first came here by chance while investigating an unusual 'security company' that was trying to scam a friend using love as the major tool.
Since coming here I have found not only a new hobby but also many new friends.
I know it was not my fault that my neighbours got scammed but I kind of felt guilty that these people who live a stones throw away have lost money when the basic knowledge I know could have prevented it.
I did get some relief from that guilt about a week ago when I found that they were contacted again by the scammer with an email along the lines of "there is a problem at the shipping company and you will need to send more money so we can send your car", luckily I had warned of this and the email was ignored.
Today I have recieved my greatest reward so far in my baiting career after reading your posts and in particular the part where you had both found this site from a google search which bought you to the email I had posted here.
I now have that warm fuzzy feeling you get when you do something good, you still have your cash and my neighbours now have a little satisfaction that the bastards that robbed them missed out this time.
This for me is what scambaiting is all about
The fact that we get to have fun at scammers expense is the added bonus.
You both asked how you can help to get the bastards,
stick around, read up, make a meagre donation if you can afford it to help keep this site open and within a few months time hopefully you too will get the same warm fuzzy feeling you have both given me. |

I have seen several of these on eBay lately. I have started to email them(scammer) to get info and they shortly thereafter remove the posting. Most of them are not very good at this. |

This blog has been a fantastic resource for me.
I too have been a victim of this scam.
I had the same issue purchasing a non-existent car from a fake eBay.
The thing that blows me away is they used yet another ID to redeem the money from Western Union. Instead of Brudik Larson or Paula Vielman they used Stuart Green. The false sellers mane was Adriana Sandoval.
I had purchased a Mercedes C200 Elegance for $8500. I sent the money expecting the car to arrive soon after.
I then found the real seller of the vehicle who had it for sale for $21000.
That was when i found these guys out.
Some of you would be very satisfied to know that I have Interpol tracking these guys down. The so far have traced phone numbers from Romania and the money was in fact picked up from a Western Union in the Netherlands.
The Australian Federal Police are tracking the emails sent to me with their excellent software to trace the source of the emails.
Although it is likely that I wont see my money back, I will rest better knowing these cheats are locked away.
It'd be great to hear if anyone else has taken any action against these people. Justice will be served

It's worth reiterating that if you plan to purchase anything online, especially high value items, then check, check and double check ALL the information the 'seller' gives you. You'd be amazed and shocked what a simple Google search on a name, email address, phone number, even a phrase from a scam advert/letter will reveal.
eBay, Craigslist, Myspace, msn etc etc are absolutely infested with scammers of all types so if someone approaches you with a deal that looks too good to be true, then your first thought should be "this is a scam", not "wow, what a bargain!".
There are honest traders on these websites of course and they are as aware of the scammers as anyone because their business is directly hit too. A legitimate seller won't mind at all if you want to make absolutely sure they are who they say they are so ask questions and check their answers. |

Just to add to Gnashers advice ^^^ the first thing I did was to google different things about the emails, and I didn't get a hit on any of it, this goes to show 3 things
1. Googling information wont allways reveal a scam so look for other signs and as suggested, have the seller prove who they are, get a phone number, ID, copy of registration and check it very carefully.
2. It highlights the importance of posting up the information of scams on a site like this one or scamwarners (Link at the top of this page) which will hopefully alert others doing google searches.
3. Never send money using Western Union or MoneyGram either for that matter to someone you do not personally know
The scammers are fully aware that some people do check the content of their emails and so they change names and email addresses regularly for this reason.
@Big Nick,
Firstly I am sorry you got scammed, we here actively do all sorts of things to make it harder for scammers to operate but unfortunately all of our efforts are obviously not enough to stop it completely.
Second, I hope what you say about the scammers getting caught is true but unfortunately I hold little hope of that happening.
I would preume that you have reported it to the ACCC through their website which will hopefully alert our various agencies as to how big a problem this is.
One last thing, after reading through this thread I am sure you have learnt about how they will most probably try to scam you for more money, my neighbours who I mentioned at the start of this thread were asked to pay more money due to a problem with the delivery, fortunately by then they were aware of this and did not respond.
You may also get an email from someone who is pretending to be helping you to recover your money for a fee, again, this is another way to fleece you of more of your money.
BTW, Please prove me wrong with the scammers getting caught. |
