Hi, another computer question, I need to run a DVD ROM disk on my computer, put the disk in, nothing happens, I went to "my computer" and after opening that, double clicked the Compact Disc (D) properties, and it shows as there being no space left, not sure why it says used space 0 Bytes, if it's 0, why is it all used?:

Image

Presumably, that's the reason the DVD wont run when I put it in? Any idea how to clear the used space so I can run the DVD? Also, why would it be showing as all space used up, I never use DVD's on the computer Confused It's the same on Compact Disc (ESmile, all blued out there as well Confused

are you using a CD-drive to read the DVD? That won't work.

Otherwise, the DVD might be bad (unreadable) - I get the same 0 out of 0 bytes when I put in a DVD upside down.

No. Thats what is displayed when there is no disk in the drive or disk isnt recognised.

The disk space data shows the DVD/CD *DISK* capacity (which is your storage. without the cd in the drive there is no disk storage).

If you have a disk (non-writable) and it only contains 1mb of data then it will also show as full, as it has no capacity to write to it.

Are you still using that computer from the 80's? Most operating systems will have the drivers for all common DVD players, you might need to install them on older OS's.

I sometimes have the same issue with certain disks and some disks take ages to list the contents for some reason. Is it a copied disk? Try going to.. My Computer.. rightclick mouse on the DVD drive then select 'Explore' and see if it trys to read it.

If this helps, the disk will always show up as full... In my experience anyways, I do not think it's even remotely possible to "clear" space.

If it were a re-writable disk it would show any excess space which you can write to.[/quote]

Nah, it's going in the correct DVD draw, so seeing all the spaced up is normal then, weird.

No, not a copied disk, a brand new one from the Open University

I put the disk in, and when I do th "explore" thing, a box pops up saying:

Please insert a disc in to drive D:

This might be far too obvious, but you say D and E are recognised as "Compact Disc", are they able to read DVDs as well as CDs?

Did it ever work with a DVD or is this the first time you try it?

Your system does not recognise the disk.

Is it a data disk or a film?

Even if its a DVD ROM you still need drivers for it to read DVD. You normally wouldn't have to do this though. Best bet would be to try another DVD disk in it and see if it works.
