Depends on the e-mail host. Most allow you just auto-trash suspected spam.

Other than that there is not much you can do.

Though if it is a scammer . . . you can always bait him. . . .

No, nothing you can do apart from adding stuff to your spam filters, which doesn't always work, never open a spam email, the spammers embed images in them, that sends a message to the scammer server saying the email was read, and indicating your email address is active, so they send you more spam, just delete it.

The only thing you can do is, get a new email address and close the old one down, then don't post the new email address anywhere online, other wise you will start getting spammed again when they harvest your addy.

My real / main email only goes to people I know, and businesses I deal with, with all the opt outs checked.

I have another email for forums and those "throw away" sites that make you sign up to get in. I rarely look in the inboxes of those. Once in a while to empty them.

The spam filters on my (cable) ISP are excellent, I almost never get spam. I have recently been recieving a trickle of scam letters, but they go to the surplus forum. Evil or Very Mad

^^^ You can still end up with spam. Your e-mail domain name is probably well known, and there are "businesses" out there whose sole moneymaker is e-mail addresses. They have spider programs who trawl the web for e-mail addresses and send them to lists, and businesses trade list data to make their lists more complete. Then the spammers use a botnet, most recently the Storm botnet, to send billions of spam e-mails from millions of zombie computers. Current estimates state that the Storm botnet may number as many as 50 million infected machines. They of course are the culprits behind the DDoS attack that took Eater down in September.
