Trips to the zoo are always fun, especially when your company pays for you and 5 people of your choice to go. I thought I would share these cool pictures (of the animals) with all of you. Very Happy

My camera's battery died just after the harpy eagle. Sad I'm not sure if there are any polar bears there anyway. Very Happy

@419weasel, I liked your meerkat and your raptor pics.

There was something wrong with one of the local zoo's meerkats when I visited a while ago. Clicky

The pic at the bottom is a rock hyrax, otherwise known as a Dassie. And yes - apparently the elephants closest living relative - got figure. Confused

Are those penguins the famous Arabian Tin-Foil-Nose Penguins, who are always worried that another penguin is trying to steal their fish? I dunt never seen penguins like that, for sure.... Wink

Oh, and...
Quote:
Hyraxes are widely stated to be the closest living relatives of elephants. This is not so. Though both are within the cohort of mammals known as Afrotheria, the Hyrax is not the closest living relative of the elephant. Elephants (Proboscidea) and hyraxes (Hyracoidae) are both more closely related to manatees and dugongs (Sirenia) than they are to one another.

Then again, that's Wikipedia talking.... also if you want to ingratiate yourself to your Spanish friends...

Quote:
Early Phoenician navigators mistook the rabbits of the Iberian Peninsula for hyraxes (Hebrew: Shaphan); hence they named it I-Shapan-im, meaning "land of the hyraxes", which became the Latin word "Hispania", the root of Spain's modern Spanish name Espaa and the English name Spain.

One clue was the St. Augustine grass. That part of TX is my favorite. San Angelo, Kerrville, Fredericksburg, etc. Barbecue at Dripping Springs. Edward's Plateau wildlife. Peaches at roadside stands. Wildflowers in the spring. Ahhh, God bless Texas!

Is that what the grass is called? Laughing These pictures were taken at the Dallas Zoo. (I don't live in Dallas, but the admission was free for us that day. Very Happy )

The zoo is a far cry better than it was many years ago.. Lots of improvments and more to come!
