When you're backpacking, rocks are your best friend. Along with screaming. Unless you like starving. (Food thieves)! Last resort is a dead run into the woods, preferably weaving downhill. I had a very large sow bear with 2 cubs instill Fear and Loathing into my very soul in Yosemite once. I was ready to jump into the lake and start swimming. Momma was quite upset! She sat on the shore until well after sundown. I was stuck on a rocky peninsula. I was reading the headlines in my head, "Packer mauled in Touloume Meadows". It makes you feel very much alive when your heartrate hits 200+ BPM.

I would not shoot a paintball gun at a bear unless the balls had pepper in them and then only from inside a Brink's truck.

3 golden rules to bear baiting:

1st rule,,,,,,,,,RUN in the opposite direction Shocked

2nd rule,,,,,,,,RUN FASTER still in the opposite direction Shocked

I agree with Les Noise ^^

Having dealt with them in Montana (US), even that might not work to well. So have the other, slower person also wear bright colored clothes and strong perfume.
