Your IT department has full control over your email. The way it works most of the time is that the Inbox resides on the Exchange server. When you open Outlook, you authenticate and it opens your own little location within the Exchange server. Webmail works the same way. It's simply a web interfact to your Exchange account. Your IT department can delete whatever, whenever they want in the interest of the company.

If you lost something important, they should be running nightly backups, and may be able to restore it for you.

If you really want to xfer files that aren't company related, get something like rapidshare.com to upload your files to, or simply use gmail and email yourself the file. You can't trust that the IT deparment won't delete personal stuff. The email is the property of the company, which is controlled by the IT department. It's not your account or property.

A way around this would be to open up a local PST file, and have your corporate email delivered to that location instead. The downside is that it will be a local file on that ONE machine, so you won't be able to access emails that have been downloaded via the Exchange webmail client.

As stairgate says, deliver mail to a local PST file, but have it on a USB stickdrive (as long as this doesn't breach the rules, I know there are companies where they are forbidden.)
On our exchange server, you cannot auto-forward mails to external accounts, so you may need to be aware of that too.

Yeah, if you wish to forward to an external account then the IT people would have to create an object in AD and then you'd have to set a rule up to forward.

There is of course the really safe method:

At work, do your work and stick your company's policy. Do your private stuff at home.

An ex-Eater-member used to bitch endlessly that his "asshole" bosses were oppressing him because they objected to him surfing the net up to eight hours a day at work. Confused

Needless to say, as far as I know, he is presently unemployed.

the account has been 'deleted' because i work for the company but also choose to represent my fellow workers with their employment concerns.
we have been mis treated on various issues which the company has mis led the members of the union and i have contacted(which is my legal right to do so,by e mail) the appropriate authorities which oversee such issues.

this is classed as union duties which the company allows me to use the PC for.
i suspect because of my involvement in contacting these outside people of authority, the company has had something to do with the sudden disapearance of my mail account.

thanks for the advice and tech issues i have raised answered

Wink

Not everyone is paid to work 100% of the time, some people are paid to wait. I was working Xmas day; there was no work to do but I was being paid to be there in case anything came in and so I did some private stuff.
(I take your point though, in a jackbooty, exploitation of the proletariat kind of way)

^^^ All I said was that it was safe, as far as keeping one's personal files safe from deletion is concerned.

In the OP remmy223 didn't mention what the situation was.

Different companies have different policies on internet usage. If all sides abide, no problem.

^^^^ i really didnt wish to post the full story as why it had been deleted as it was more of a technical issue than an employee/company issue in regards to this forum.

i have and always will, work within my contract of employment and the rules that have been set down by the company.
on saying that, i wish my company would abide by its rules and the laws of this government on how the operate their business and how they treat individuals.

enough said.

Yes, IT can read anyone's email at any time. Nothing is "private" on a corporate exchange server.
