The man who created cartoon classic Scooby-Doo has died.

Iwao Takamoto died of heart failure in hospital in Los Angeles at the age of 81.

In a career spanning more than 60 years, Takamoto worked on well-known films and television shows for Disney and Hanna-Barbera such as 'Cinderalla', '101 Dalmatians and 'The Flintstones'. However, it was his creation of cowardly dog Scooby-Doo which brought him his greatest success.

Takamoto said he created Scooby-Doo after talking to a Great Dane breeder, and named him after Frank Sinatra's final phrase in the song 'Strangers in the Night'. In a recent talk at Cartoon Network Studios, he said the breeder "showed me some pictures and talked about the important points of a Great Dane, like a straight back, straight legs, small chin and such. "I decided to go the opposite and gave him a hump back, bowed legs, big chin and such. Even his colour is wrong."

Takamoto also created other famous cartoon dogs such as Astro from 'The Jetsons' and Muttley, the mixed-breed who appeared in several Hanna-Barbera animations.

He also directed the 1973 feature 'Charlotte's Web'.

Hey, not fair, designing Daphne was far more impressive!

They never did realise that is was always the man who owned the fairground, or whatever, back in scene one.

And he'd have gotten away with it too, if it wasn't for those meddling kids.

Anyone else notice that they changed the theme song since we were kids? I was so excited to watch this with my kids and was disappointed that the original theme song wasn't there anymore. I always liked it.

When I was a kid, that was my absolute favorite show. And yes, he should have gotten some sort of award for designing Daphnie. Even as a 5 or 6 year old boy, I looked at her and thought to myself, "I gotta get me one of those someday."

i would compare scrappy doo to cyianide injected into a cherry pie. why would anyone do something so horrible to something so awesome? Evil or Very Mad

my kids are gutted when they heard the news this morning.
'is that right,scooby doo is dead.no more scooby'asked the 9 year old
'im gutted'replied the 7 year old.

then i explained that scooby would live forever

'brill,more cartoons then dad'

Charlotte's Web always made me cry.

National Public Radio did a piece today about drawing in the internment camps. That's where Iwao picked up his skills, in a concentration camp.

My little one said "Why is it that we only hear about these cool people once they die?"
