Hello Everyone,
So this story started at the beginning of the week when I received a very standard 419 email on my 66 year old grandpa email saying that western union is giving me money.

I responded and it went from there.

btw,I removed my bait name fro the emails and replaced it with (insert name).

Scammer:
Attn Mr. (insert name)

Thanks for your information meanwhile before we proceed further in
crediting your winning as programmed to receive 5000 dollars daily per
until the total wining fund of 800.000.000 dollars finish.

We hereby to let you know that we have two options to deliver your
winning fund which you are mandated to make your choice bellow:

1.Before we proceed further in sending your winning fund as agreed
5000 dollars per day, you are required to present to this office fund
release certificate signed and legalized on your Name from ministry
of finance.

2. If you may find it difficult to get the fund release certificate
from ministry of finance empowering you the beneficiary of the said
winning fund 800.000.00 dollars, To enable us help you legally means
that we shall load your winning fund into VISA ATM CARD on your name
and process it legally under UBA bank VISA ATM CARD in a way it will
come out in your name within the process of 24 hours from today
following the delivery to your country home address through delivery
courier service which will also last for 48 hours to arrive to your
country home address.

Therefore you are mandated to make your choice report to this office
urgently to enable us proceed further base on the choice you made.

I responded saying that option 1 is the better option.

Scammer:

Yes the two options are good the different is that VISA CARD helps to
delivery easily without any problem just that you will pay for the
delivery fees of 220 dollars.

While to transfer base on the agreement 5000 dollars per day will also
need you to present first the fund release certificate which will also
cost you 2300 dollars to have the certificate officially from the
ministry of finance

Therefore check yourself to know the best option of yours while we
proceed further with action by sending your fund base on your choice
depends on how serious you are in doing what is required.

Is the certificate that expensive? Can't we just make it ourselves?

Scammer:
It will require a trip to Gambia with fligt to obtain a fund release
certificate from ministry of fianace , So if you are willing you can
fly down to Gambia to get us the fund release certificate or if you
can not fly down there in Gambia i will check the total cost of
travelling to Gambia and give you the result to enable you transfer
the travelling fees so that one of our Staff can present you over
there in Gambia.

When you are ready let me know so that i will get back to you with the
full requirement of Gambia trip on your behalf

Moreover if you finally deceide let us so that we will know if to
proceed with VISA CARD on your name or we should make a trip to Gambia
to get the needed document that will empower us to credit the total
wining fund into your personal bank account, Now deceide and let me
know the best way forward.

Sir that is not a problem, I am able to travel to Gambia, it's cheap.

The scammer was getting a bit enthusiastic, so I made him even more greedy by saying:

Hello Sir,
I am ready to depart to Gambia. I can depart as early as tomorrow.
I will take $10,000 cash with me.

Will you arrange accommodation for me? It must be a comfy hotel though.

Also, can you pick me up from the airport?

Suddenly the scammer changed his plan.

Dear (insert name)

Thanks for your quick response base on the directions given to you to travel over to Gambia to obtain a fund release certificate for the releasing of your winning fund valued 800.000.00 dollars, but before moving to Gambia you are mandated to fly down here in Togo first for a signing of fund certificate that will lead you to Gambia for the final activation of fund release certificate, meanwhile before proceeding down here in Togo, let us have your traveling documents such as listed bellow:

Your International passport copy

Your fight ticket Copy

Your personal Telephone Number

On confirmation of our requirement concerning your arrival to Africa, we shall tell you next options following your arrival here in Togo

Ah, so these scammers are in Togo! Well it was obvious because their email addressees westernunionofficetogo.
In the next email I took the opportunity to see where these guys are by giving them a link to click on. I created one with my own IP Logger. It showed that they are indeed in Lome!

Good Day Sir,
Ok my flight is confirmed.
Unfortunately I can not fly directly to Lome Togo because it will take too long and I feel claustrophobic if I sit in a airplane that long.
I have booked a flight to Lagos Nigeria because it is shorter to fly there.
I hope you understand.
I will take $10,000 cash with me.
Attached is my passport and here you can view my itenerary. It's not letting me attach it too the email so click here (insert tracker link)

Also, can you arrange for pick up in Lagos?

My plan was to take the Delta airlines flight from LAX to NYC and then to LOS. (Los Angeles>New York>Lagos)
I didn't really travel btw.

The scammer wasn't to happy with my choice of flying to Lagos Nigeria instead of Lome Togo, because while I was "flying" he kept sending me emails saying that I should travel from LAX>CDG>LFW (Los Angeles>Paris>Lome).

Since I was "flying" I could not answer.

A few hours later when my Delta flight landed in Lagos I send him an email saying:
Good Evening Sir,
I have safely arrived in Lagos with the cash. I am tired now, going to my hotel.

Let's talk tomorrow about our further plans.

Good Night,
(insert name)

The scammer was relieved/angry and he said that he is glad I arrived safely and that I should book my flight to Lome ASAP.

The next morning I said:

Good Morning Sir,

I will be making my arrangements to travel to Lome. I will let you know within an hour.

The scammer responded fairly quickly:

Attn Mr.(insert name)

Listern and listen carefully,like I said to you yesterday night, it is mandatory you forward your flight ticket from Lagos to Lome 4-5 good hours before your arrival to Lome for total verification of who is coming here base on your personal data with us already on behalf of the winning fund.

It will also help us to secure your arrival, therefore if you ever try to come on your own without following instruction no body from our department will attend to you.

So I was looking which ticket I had to Photoshop for him next but to my surprise the airline does not except last minute bookings. You have to book 2 days in advance.

So I broke the news to the scammer:
Hello Sir,

There is a problem. I can't book the flight because the airline doesn't want last minute booking.
Look at the attached screenshot.

I will talk to the Hotel about alternative transportation, I want too arrive in Lome as soon as possible.

I will get back to you.

He did not respond yet, so I scared him by saying:
Hello Sir,
The hotel told me that they can send me with a driver to Porto Novo in Benin.
They did warn me that it will be a dangerous journey.

Can you arrange something from Porto Novo? Otherwise I will have to arrange something with a local taxi.

Let me know,

The scammer responded

Attn Mr.(insert name)

We still insist that you most hold on wait for flight to land you here, even if it takes you more 2 days to arrive here with flight this is the only way we can work with you knowing That your winning fund valued 800.000.00 dollars is too big amount for some to claim as easy as you are trying do, therefore for this reason we advised that you book flight send the ticket to us for important verification on your behalf before your arrival, If you ever try to do things on your own without following our Instructions , is a pity we will not in any way to attend you.

Shortly after that another email came in:

Attn Mr. (insert name)

I repeat again Mr. (insert name),If sure you are the right beneficiary of this winning fund help yourself by waiting for flight for more two days knowing that spending another 100 to 200 dollars from your coming money to secure your trip and life most importantly will be more appreciative than losing all after your long trip down to this place,

thank you from Mr. Coocke Edward

He was clearly scared that I could get kidnapped if I took a taxi across the border to Benin.

I told him that I will arrange the ticket and I will let him know.

He responded:

Let me know as soon as you are ready and forward the ticket to me
after confirmation also be carefull over there in Nigeria with the
kind of people you do things together knowing that Nigeria is indeed a
bad country.

The only way you can be secured is by moving by flight apart from
flight do not arrange to trip with any person right there in Nigeria
and be very careful even at the hotel.

I will be expecting your ticket soonest

Now he was afraid that the hotel staff could kidnap me?

A hour of Photoshop later I send him an email with a Itinerary attached and I said:

Hello Sir,
The booking for the flight to Lome has been confirmed for the 22th of February (Saturday).

I will be arriving at 10:40 AM Lome Time on Saturday.
Attached is the email copy the hotel send me.

See you in Lome,
(insert name)

This morning I received a rather joyous email from the scammer:

Dear (insert name),

You have done very well by sending us your flight schedule from Lagos
to Lome in advance as we have requested and be rest assured that every
arrangement has been put in place.

In addition,one of our bank staffs will be at the airport 20 minutes
before your arrival to pick you up and check you in a very good hotel.

Thanks, while we look forward to seeing you on the 22nd of February

2020 ( Saturday).

So the plan from here is as follows, I will tell him that an immigration official has put me in an room because he told me that it is not safe to exit the airport.
Then I will say that the official is taking me in his car to some safe hotel.

That hotel will be 100KM from Lome airport.

What are your thoughts? Any suggestions on how to play with this guy?

Nice work. I would find an excuse why you can't meet him in Lome after all and cancel the flight. Make him travel if he wants his cash so badly.
Also you can pretend your character is in Lome and give him a run around the city, changing the meeting place every time because you got suspicious. You saw a few men looking at you strangely, the taxidriver brought you to the wrong location, there's an incident at the hotel that needs to be resolved first. Anything. You can annoy him and keep him busy with so many excuses.

I always make sure to send the scammer a very filtered copy of a US Passport, I filter it to the point that they can still see it but is to crappy to recycle it for someone else.

I always tell them I "scanned" it and never give them a full color copy, even if they ask.

Oh and thanks for moving it, I didn't realize I had to put it in the main forum.

Are you baiting from your grandfather's email address? If so, this is incredibly risky and could put your family members in harm's way. Please clarify!

Also, Purple asked a great question regarding your avatar. In Google, you can search on images, and any lads who find our site may know how to search images as well. If a search on your image turns up something you don't want a lad to find, you may want to change it.

Please let us know you're baiting safely.

As to possible moves, off the top of my head;

1) 'A nice man in the bar here overheard me talking about my trip and what it was for and he says you're not the real [whatever they claim to be]. He said that for a fee he would take me to the real office, which is right here in Lagos, and I would get what was coming to me in a very short time. I'm just about to leave with him...'

2) 'They stopped me at the airport security and said that my "papers weren't in order". They demanded lots of money to fix it up and I think they were trying to get a bribe out of me. They threatened to search me as a terrorist suspect and if they did they would have found the moneybelt with my passport and the $25,000 USD in cash. So I gave them everything I had on me and they let me go. But I can't fly now in case they search me again. You will have to come here...'
