So, one of my regular customers came in to my work today, and he was in a pretty good mood. When I asked him why he told me fortune was finally smiling upon him and proceeded to tell me why...
Well apparently he had been selected as a secret shopper....yeah....my internal alarms immediately started ringing. Since I'm pretty familiar with him, I was able to get him to show me the info and check he'd been sent.
All the red flags were there...cash the check in person(because it takes a little longer to get flagged that way)...buy 8 $100 amazon gift cards from 1 store then 8 more from another...text pics of the scratch offs to the "supervisor" immediately etc, etc, etc. Basically the whole letter was a red flag and the check was from a different company than who he was supposed to be "working" for. I was convinced it was a scam.
Anyway, thanks to the things I've learned over the years from here, scamwarners, etc. I was able to articulate to him why I thought it was a scam in a way that did not make him feel stupid, and I'm 99% sure I convinced him. I even wrote a link to scamwarners on a piece of paper and gave it to him.
So long story short, I feel pretty good about that.
And you guys and gals are the only people I know that I think would truly appreciate the story so I decided to share it with y'all. |
