The IP that traces to California may be the mail provider's servers and not the true originating IP.

The email format reads very much like a traditional advance fee fraud. The only difference is that there is no mention of a large inheritance, but it could be just a slower intro to that part, purporting to be looking for a penpal.

You listed the subject line as penpals.com. Did you receive this message via that site? The email may also have been spoofed to appear as if it comes from there.

If you post the header (minus any of your info), we can take a look at it for you.

I just this morning opened an email with precisely the same text. Some of the details are changed, but it's essentially the same message. Because of the glaring similarities, and the fact that it already sounds as though someone is attempting to garner sympathy, I'd put this one down as a potential scam. Thank goodness I have the good sense to do my research before I reply to anything. The user replied to an ad on the website penpalsnow.com. Naturally, I never undertake any endeavour on the internet without fully understanding the risks.
