Hello All,

First, a bit of backstory: This was the first bait I started running after I decided to formalize my activities and join Eater. Since it was a bank loan bait (which are usually over and done with pretty quickly), I decided to use this as an experiment -- I wanted to see how silly and far out I could get before the scammer dropped me like a rock.

Anyway, since we're now about three and a half months in and things still seem to be going strong, I thought it may be a good idea to publish what I've done so far. Over the next few days, as time permits, I will be updating this topic with my correspondence. Just so we can keep my format straight:

The lad's emails will be printed in normal type.
My emails will be printed in bold type.
My comments and thoughts will be printed in italic type.

Since this was my first bait, I fully realize that I made a number of mistakes and there are many areas in which I could have done much better. I will put some comments in places where I know i whoopsied, and I would certainly appreciate any comments/hints/tips/tricks/questions/lessons learned from any other baiters out there.

And, finally, a quick disclaimer: My character is a dumb-as-dirt pig farmer from Poland (sort of a combination of Borat and Manuel from "Fawlty Towers"). This character is not intended to insult any members of Eater who may be of Polish origin or descent (since I myself am of Slavic descent) but was simply chosen because the Polish currency (zlotys) is just so darn much fun to write and say.

I probably made a mistake here by getting aggressive too quickly. I just didn't like the presumptuousness of that "GET BACK TO US NOW" in the subject. I still needed to learn to distance my pet peeves from those of my character. I also made a mistake by asking too many questions in one email.

Oh, man. Mistakes galore here. I stayed aggressive with the lad. I didn't question any of his informational needs and just gave him all the info he needed at once. Bad, bad baiter. Then, I turned around and asked him the same series of banking questions. Ah, the folly of n00bs.

I did back off a little here on my anger, but I don't recall it being a conscious decision. More than anything, I think I just got lucky.

A few other notes: Damn, was I overwriting here. I think I was too in love with the story I was telling and not cognizant enough of the bait. And, to make things worse, I kept asking the same series of questions. What was it Einstein said about doing the same thing while expecting different results?

About the only good thing in this email is that he finally took off his stupid email header with his address and contact info. Since I will take what I can get at this point, I like to view it as a sign that he was getting tired of the whole banker persona and just wanted the scam done with. Although, I do have to chuckle when I see my formal name in writing (which consists of my name, my brother's, my son's, and my favorite pig).

I'd love to get a little piggy in my siggy (it kind of fits in with the whole pig farmer theme) but since this was originally intended to be an experiment, I was more concerned with wasting his time.

And that brings me to another big mistake I made. Playing a character this dumb makes it very hard to make any sort of demands. If you have any advice on how I can get an account out of him, I'd appreciate it.

I have to admit - this one freaked me out a bit, since I thought I may have been tumbled. According to Google Translate, the lad wrote “So you want to improve your credit?”, which I took to mean that he was asking if I wanted to increase my loan.

I just noticed that the lad put something in (presumably) Polish at the top of the email. Had I noticed that when I first received the email, I may have gotten worried.

Other topics of interest: I started referring to the loan as a “gift” here. At some point down the road, I thought it might be funny for me to realize that I was expected to pay back these zlotys that I received. Silly, of course, since I should have thought things through and realized that we’d never get anywhere near a loan distribution.

From a fanfic standpoint, I have two comments: Yes, I realize that I already reported Katarina and Bogdana as dead, decapitated, and eaten. So what? Even Tolkien wasn’t always internally consistent and, besides, I didn’t feel like Googling more Slavic names. Also, please take note of my desire to own 28 pigs.

I got the distinct impression the lad wasn’t reading my emails. I mean, he *clearly* wasn’t reading my nonsense about the pigs but he also wasn’t reading my legitimate concerns about the term of the loan. It may have been a bit early, but I thought I’d let him know that he wasn’t the only internet banker out there.

Also, I learned something (actually, a couple of things) here. First off, a lot of these lads ask for info just to seem legitimate and don’t actually care it they get anything. Although I just avoided the topic of my bank info, I never heard another word on it from the lad. Similarly, if a lad keeps asking for something, just tell him you already sent it. Chances are, he’s going to be too lazy to check.

Again, big mistakes. I should not have allowed the bank transfer idea to go out the window so quickly. I also should have required him to give me more of an explanation of the WU process. Heck, IRL I didn't really understand the WU process until my mentor gave me a quick-n-dirty overview.

I assume that this email is in response to my dollar chop attempt from June 5. Not only did he seem unconcerned that the notorious Clyd3 C@sh took his money but he set up a new email address. Odd, but not totally unexpected.

Then, within a day or so of each other, I received the following emails:

Date: June 10, 2014
Subject: READ AND UNDERSTAND
From: <original email address>

Unfortunately we are to inform many of you who have not yet to reach
their loans after our meeting with the Unit Money Laundering IMF , it
was decreed that , due to the recent terrorist attacks and money
laundering , along with what happened 11 April and the recent events
between creditors and debtors as many borrowers were arrested for
giving loans without checking where the funds go and what purpose will

controlling the international transfer requires that all borrowers
must receive GROUP IMF CODE will become familiar not collateral ,

, and this code will cost the sum of 6,000zl for all borrowers in
Austria , 90,000zl for all European borrowers, 24,000zl for all
borrowers in Africa and Asia and the rest of Continents cost the
amount of 27,000zl , respectively, kindly so for you to get the IMF
CODE now you are to make the payment of 6,000zl sent with the western
union payment information below and get back to us with the payment
information to enable us continue the loan transfer okay.

And, of course, I received two more copies of the same email on June 11.

Now, this is interesting. Reading between the lines, I'm going to guess that a gang of lads had a bit of a disagreement and split up into two different camps. One group kept the original email address and the splinter faction set up a new address and is now trying to poach “customers” from the first. Naturally, I may as well try to keep both baits going.

You know, in most situations, I'd be kinda hesitant to publish an ongoing (if for no other reason than I wouldn't want to jinx myself) but these chuckleheads really seem to be operating in a half-assed fashion.

I mean, if me typing with one hand while fighting off hordes of zompigs with a shotgun and an axe didn't give them reason to tumble that I might not be 100% legit, I don't think this will push me over the edge.
