I've baited a number of Credit Card scammers over the last few months, but John Terry is special. He thought that he could scam an unsuspecting Swiss shop keeper out of 2 high-end watches, 4 blackberry mobile phones and $5,300. Instead, it has cost him 39 stolen credit cards (and 2 bank accounts) reported, the possible name of his UK contact passed to the authorities and a lot of heartache.

The following characters take part

John Terry CC Scammer played by the lad.
Swiss Watches Small Swiss watch shop owner who welcomes international orders played by me.
UK Receiver the UK recipient of the package, who shares the same email address as John Terry.
GP5 3-Track super efficient courier firm played by me (hereafter refered to as just GPS).
Maria shop assistant at Swiss Watches played by me.

I can't remember where I picked the scammer up from, so we start with my initial reply to him enclosing a PDF pricelist for Omega watches.

The scammer gets back with an address for shipping (sent 3 times). This is a new one for a CC scammer for me, it looks like he actually wants the goods rather than the normal payment to the fake shipper (they are worth far more).

I have just received an update from our manager at the East Midlands Airport depot and he has advised that the Customs officials have held the package pending payment of the customs duty.

I have been advised by customs that the declared value of the package is $5,306.00 and that the duty payable on that is 20% which amounts to $1,061.20 which will be about £671.40 at todays exchange rate.

Payment can only be made in person by cash, cheque or credit card at the customs office at East Midlands Airport. You will also need to take original identification papers with you when you collect the package.

Please let me know if you are agreeable to that and I will provide you with the details of where you have to go to collect the package.

Please note, the package will be held for 7 days and if it is not collected within this timescales, it will be returned to the originator.

He has advised that in the past customs officials have accepted a bonded payment from the courier company (i.e. we pay the fees and then collect them back from you when the parcel is delivered). However, in order for us to do this, we will need a copy of your identification (i.e. passport).

If you are able to forward us a copy of your passport this afternoon, then I can arrange delivery for tomorrow morning.

We do however currently have a problem with our mailserver not receiving attachments properly, so can I ask you to send the scan of your passport to the following email address - [email protected]

I have just got back from the Western Union office and they would not allow me to send the money. They said that the recipient was flagged on their security blacklist as a known criminal and because of this they do not allow transfers in that name.

I am not sure what is going on, the manager of the Western Union office was very rude to me and treated me like I was a criminal. They were wanting to call the Polizei and I had to give them my ID card to copy.

Currently your package is stored at our depot as we made two delivery attempts and neither were successful. Normally in this situation, we would return the package to the originator. However in this case, as the package contains edible items, I think that it is best that we destroy it in our furnace to avoid contamination.

This needs to be bumped to the top of the list. What a wonderful harvest! I would say that this was a stolen list of personal customer details from somewhere other wise that is a serious amount of plastic. One can almost see the scammer going down the list of hundreds and hundreds of card details ticking and crossing as he goes.

My 'shop' doesn't have a website. I just have a PDF price list that I found on Google.

Most of the CC scammers I have baited have been picked up from formats posted in surplus. I just reply to them with my pricelist and tell them that I'm happy to ship overseas and take CCs.
