Ahh, the Jamaican lottery scam.

It's a particularly vile scam, and it's serious business in Jamaica. The gangs running these scams make the typical African scam gangs look like high-school clubs. These are often violent gangs who are perfectly willing to murder the competition. It's not uncommon for them to be involved in drugs and/or weapons trade as well.

They have been running the same scam for years, and typically target the elderly or those who have gambling histories. It's not unusual for them to have someone in the US who is paid to hang out at casinos, racetracks, etc. to collect data on vulnerable people for them to target.

These gangs produce particularly authentic looking fake documents, and may have several different people working the victim from multiple angles. When family members have intervene and/or victims have changed phone numbers, the scammers have been known to call their neighbors, demanding they go and put their victims on the phone. When the money dries up, they won't hesitate to revert to threats against victims or interfering family members.

While we always encourage baiting safely, these represent the extreme case. You do not want to mess with them without some serious precautions.

Thanks for that info Dorothy. I wonder how they would react if someone could get their phone number and do the 1000 lad phone calls trick on them.

We've had more & more casinos built in my area too. Could be a possible side effect from those having been built.
