Hello everyone .

I`m not sure if I will be going to like to do this as sport , in fact I love mind challenges , but I might be a little afraid of it. I joined because I have had a close encounter with a man ...that lasted about 2 weeks .... and after searching the web , I found out he was what is called a romance scammer . I might share my experience with you.
I have no idea this exist, it took me by surprise , and it made me feel curious so I have been reading about the subject and how to find ip`s in emails , and search for their location etc.
The man who was writing to me claimed to be in UK , but his ip is from California.
I came across your site , and I really have had a good laugh. So I thought , if I ever have to come across one of these caharacters again I`d better be prepared, if you don`t mind me joining ...and who knows , maybe I like it enough and finally decide to have fun and join you as a team .

Baiting isn't just sport - it's serious crimefighting. I just reported a bank account for fraud (that's what the latest piggy in my siggy means) and hopefully will get a fake bank website from the same lad soon (the flags are for those I've already had shut down).

There's nothing to be afraid of, as long as you give the lad no way to find out who or where you really are. We use made-up addresses that don't exist but sound real. Lots of baiters use Gmail to hide their IP addresses; some, including me, use Tor, so that not even the webmail server knows where we are.

I once e-dated a romance scammer before I knew anything about it. S/he was in Udmurtia, Russia. Fortunately I know enough Russian to figure out that she was a he and a liar.

I second getting a mentor.

maybe, he (the scammer) is using yahoo and that was the IP of yahoos center in sunnyvale CA.

@Jess: there should be another IP further down in the text, very often it starts with 41. (for a long time, this was the only IP block of african ISPs)

Well, he was using a gmail adress to send me the emails , and a yahoo account to chat.
Both send me there .
I`m so straightforward , and naive I`m not sure I might be doing this well.I tend to believe everyone. But I`m willing to learn.

I will accept to have a mentor of course , that would help me . The man who talked to me has his picture in a profile in netlog with a logo of trust on him , that makes me sick.

He was using a fake web page too , where you can look at the same picture, and he did send me some. I was stupid enough to sent him some of mine too.... and I hate to think he might be talking to someone with those as avatar.

Glad you found out the truth before you really got screwed over. I don't read where anyone has told you that you need to break all contact with this scammer if they have any true information on you. Get a mentor for some quality help.

Oh !! I already did that !!! about 2 weeks ago ...when my friends in the UK told me the adresses on the web page didn`t exist at all , I asked him about that ...why are you lying to me ? he replied : I have never lied to anyone in my life ..haha !! I ceased talking to him right on the spot.

No , I never gave him my personal details, ....just my real name , and real email addy and messenger Sad

I don`t know how much could he have gotten from my yahoo account.

Sunnyvale is the location of Yahoo's servers; Mountain View is google's servers. Neither will be the true location of the scammer.

Scammers often target single moms, as it can be harder for single moms to find someone who is ready to commit to someone with children. Scammers will show great interest in the children simply because it helps to make them seem like they are kind, caring people who are ready to settle down with a family. Many will quickly start referring to victim's children as their own to reinforce this image. I've known some scammers who have actually convinced the victim to put their children on the phone or even webcam with the children, and the scammer has told the children that he loves them and is going to be their new daddy. The whole point of this is (a) to convince you that he is a caring, generous person who will make a good father to your child, (b) make you feel more connected to him, and (c) if he pulls the child into the scam, he can make you more hesitant to cut it off, because you have to worry about hurting your own child in the process.

The truth is, he couldn't care less about your child--it's all about making you believe that you have a future so he can get hold of your money.

No , I´m not talking to him anymore since I found out his webpage was fake, about a couple of weeks ago. He never tried to contact me again since I asked him about it. In fact I had already pissed him off before that, because I was telling him I didn´t trust him at all.
He said he would be coming on January to visit me and have trust settled down, but then he asked to meet me with my child , that was too much.

If you haven't already, get a mentor. They can possibly help you with damage control and help get him listed on the sister site as well as getting the necessary info to the baiters for future pain in their general direction.

I want to say thank you to all of you who had been by my side since I first come over here .

When I did that , I had been through a long journey looking for help ...I had this man with his fake website , and his profile on Netlog , and I was finding no one to help me to understand this.

I had never heard about romance scammers before, and I started asking for help around : local police first , UK embassy .. nothing except some links which I followed,

UK police ..... not the reply I was waiting for Sad

Still, I felt I had to do something about it , and then I came across romance scammers and then I arrived here.

Finally I had found someone to talk to who understood what had happened to me, and kindly offered to be next to me for help .... the same as other new friends I have already met.

I told this man that if he was lying to me it wouldn`t be a great deal , because I`m used to trust and rely on people and friends , and I would get through the experience remaining the same old one I used to be .....
thank you so much for helping me to succeed doing this...for one bad apple I have found a bunch of nice people who has offered their friendship to me. Very Happy
