The battle for Fort McHenry was obscure, but not to the locals. I wish our National Anthem involved all of the current States, and was easier to sing.

But as I said, I sing it proudly, and badly.

It really was an obscure battle in the scheme of things.A lot of people (including locals) think that it happened during the revolution,and not the War of 1812.

Reading the Lyrics of God Save the Queen, and reading the first page of our passports in some ways make me feel proud, and almost pride for the UK.
Which i think is odd, as our country has gone from being proud, prosperous and friendly, where the whole community knew everyone, and would do anything for them.
I'm ashamed to say i dont even know the names of those who live 2 doors down from me.

Heres what the passport says

Stick her in the Tower of London with Philip and deport the rest to Canada.

That or make her and the family pay taxes (if they don't already)

Olly, hate to burst your bubble, most Passports say that or something akin to it.

U.S. version:

The Secretary of State of the United States of America hereby requests all whom it may concern to permit the citizen/national of the United States named herein to pass without delay or hindrance and in case of need to give all lawful aid and protection.

I think its a standard thing. Varies with country as to who is requesting.

The melody was lifted from a clubby English drinking song. Maybe it helps to be be a bit soaked when singing it.

Not surprising as over 75% of the white settlers in the US at the time of Independence were originally of British & Irish descent who wanted a nice big King free tax haven (lucky people)!

The British national anthem has never moved me. Always found it boring, slightly embarrassing and irrelevant in modern Britain.

If I want to feel patriotic, a rousing chorus of 'Land of hope and glory' always does it for me. prefarably sung by a large group of happy boisterous people, a la Last night of the Proms. Great stuff. Very Happy
