Now's the time to spring for more Canadian teams, since the American dollar is so weak and the Canadian dollar is... well... only slightly weaker.

Any other time, I think it's US endorsement money that drive G-Bett to look to the warm southern areas for potential host cities. That's based on nothing more than cynical observation though.

Yea... I remember. I was still a kid, but way into hockey. Even as a kid/hockey fanatic I never really watched only because 1. I was pissed off they stole Cheevers from the Bruins. 2. Guys were jumping ship strictly for cash. 3. Almost every team had one over paid superstar and the rest of the team was made up of nobodys.

Big recently-converted hockey fan here, enough that I've sprung the money for the NHL package on top of the stupid price I already pay for cable, just so I can watch my out-of-market favorite Pens (I live in Caps country....*shudder*).

Can't really weigh in on any of this discussion though. I see hockey as always being overshadowed by football in the US, and as baseball is the national pastime it's not going anywhere either. I like the idea of more Canadian teams though. It IS their sport after all Very Happy

I decided the Avs can stay at the expense of the Kings. How's that, mr.scissorkick?

Minnesota's team can once again be called the North Stars. The following teams need a name:

Halifax
Hamilton
Saskatchewan/Saskatoon
(London/Kitchener/Waterloo)

Anyone have any creative ideas?

London Forresters (Forest City)

I'm thinking London is the furthest away from Hamilton and Toronto, so I'd go with them instead of K/W

What about Thunder Bay, ON? It's quite a distance from Toronto.

^^^ the only problem with that is that it only has a population of 100,000 or so and is the middle of nowhere, no feeder population. It would have to rely strictly on its own population for success.

What about Moncton NB? Another east coast team? It's about 120,000 and is supposed to be the fastest growing urban region east of Toronto and has 1.5 million people living within a three-hour drive of the city

Sure! New Brunswick can have a team. (Now for them poor souls in Newfoundland and Laborador and Prince Edward Island, and ESPECIALLY those poor souls in Yukon, Northwest Territories, and Nunavut...we'll get to them another day)

You might need to re-shuffle the league now. How about a plain old East / West division...Like the good ol days?

Nah...we can stick Hamilton in the Canada West division. Considering there are 12 teams in each conference, 6 from each conference would make the playoffs, and the playoffs would be set up exactly like the NFL, except 7-game series instead of 1 game. Each division winner gets a bye in the first round, with the team with the better record being the #1 seed.

In the event of a tie, the tiebreaker procedure is as follows:
1. Head-to-head record
(1.5. If the tiebreaker is for the division championship, Division record)
2. Conference record
3. Goals For/Goals Against differential
4. Road record
5. Coin toss

Or maybe the first round would be only 5 games, to prevent the 1/2 seeds from getting too rusty...

Seeds 1 and 2: Bye
3 vs. 6
4 vs. 5

Highest advancing seed plays Seed 2 in the second round, lowest advancing seed plays Seed 1. Winners advance to the semifinals, the winners of that advance to the Stanley Cup Finals. Every year it would be Canada vs. USA.

Come on people, even those of you who are lukewarm towards the NHL now would watch this.

I still think Victoria, BC wouldn't be a bad choice, either.
