Ouch. My lad just googled my character's name and found one of my 'Completed Baits' on Eater here...

Mat : might be a coincidence, but I gave my character a very long, difficult name on purpose (so I might catch some pets making typo's on forms that they'd have to recreate) ... Wink

chances are extremely slim that there's anyone else alive with that name. (In fact I'm the only person in the world with that name, Googled it before ever using it Wink

)

@Bohigal : I might, though there's no hacker currently involved nor is anyone trying to sabotage anything.. the lad sent me a Google link, I just replied (with screenshot for added details Wink

) that our country has banned Eater.com because of the Information Act that was passed a few years back. So I really wouldn't have an idea what he's talking about Wink

In the meanwhile, I removed references to my full character name in the "Completed Baits" section.

Yes I've accidentally left e-mail addresses and names on full baits I've posted. Best to remove them before posting so they don't get googled.

Post your bait in this forum and the lads can find it, as I once found out to my cost.

EDIT : ^^ Roycropper : well, it seems to find the "Completed Baits" section anyway - maybe an idea to exclude it from Google? It's a tough job replacing one's character names if you want to post particularly long baits.. which is what that thread is made for Smile

Popiejopie welcome, maybe you should use a different name when baiting. I have 4 or more names not connected to my baiter name and email addresses to go with them. Advantage is get new email and new character at will.

Have had 3 or more lads google themselves here and on SW, count it as severe lad pain especially if the bait has been running for a while. Laughing

I think the benefits of having these forums accessible outweighs the drawbacks. We want people to find info when they do searches.

As for your bait, you can continue to play dumb, bait him from a different character or de-educate him about what we do here. You could tell him: "yes, you caught me. Now I won't get paid for my work with you unless you play along. If you help me out, I'll split my earnings." You can also try to get him to believe other stories for why we're doing this Examples: research - which leads to other oportunities, creative writing, etc. A whole group of us once baited two separate lads who'd found eater, as an alliance trying to help them with a class action suit against Eater. It was sort of a version of a recovery scam turned against them. (The thread is in premium members).

And google maps is now savy to some of the lads, a couple have said to me that my address does not exist because it isnt on google maps! Sad

Bait him from another addy using a new name.

You can also tell him you don't know what he is talking about but it's okay as you have received another business offer for an over due contract payment. Wait about a week or so then ASEM him a knocked up WU (obfuscate the MTCN) or MG receipt. Imply it's the third payment you have made, something like that. He might just forget about what he found on google.

If he comes crawling back tell him you love to but you can't as you have already invested 20+ grand in your new venture and now you have to do anything and everything to see it through. If he buys it he won't believe google anymore Laughing

Yesterday I noticed the same thing - by searching for "b u k t i r e c" (without spaces) I got to the Surplus letters forum, to a message that was posted a day earlier.

I think moderators should forbid indexing of any board for any robot.

@ Jason - I had that from a lad too, I told him I lived in a new development which hadn't been added to google maps yet. To prove it I chopped a photo of my character in front of a half built house and told him it had been taken 3 months earlier.

He totally bought it and didn't question my validity again, especially when I told him I was pulling out of the deal because he had so little trust in me and was prepared to believe a computer program over his business partner!!!

We want parts of this site indexed for very good reasons. Increased exposure means more people who are aware of these types of scams. If a potential victim takes time to search details on someone they're suspicious of and finds Eater, it could save them being scammed. The potential benefits far outweigh the drawbacks.

A rule should be always assume whatever you post here will be seen my a large number of mugus. That is one of the reasons I’m really not a fan of discussing the rules of baiting on this forum.

People do google things to check into it further, a point is I publish every phone number I have gotten (since Oct 2005 to last week ) in baits or just via emails on my site. I get the most hits on phone numbers as opposed to phrases. The average hits are 30 to 40 an hour.

People really do google things, a lot of people do.

He did some checking somewhere. oh well...

Search and replace is your friend when it comes to writing about ongoing baits. It's not all that much work to change a few names - if your lad is using email address like "williamsbarrister03" you can just search and replace "williamsbarrister03" with "(lad_email)". Same with your character name etc - if your character is Loveta Sukkadik, what harm is it if you change it to Loveto Sukadik - it still gets the same message across, and won't be found by lad googling.
