Hi all
Just to update my previous post:
"Welcome To Lagos" will be broadcast on BBC 2 on Thursday 15 April at 9pm. A series of 3 hour long documentaries, the first episode will focus on the lives of 2 individuals ekeing out an existence living and scavenging on the local rubbish dump. Link to BBC site:

You will get the "Hard Drive lads" here, they use to dump old computers from the UK here and the lads use to take out the hard drives and see what personnel info they could get on it, credit card details bank accounts etc.....etc.....
There was a news story about this last year, i pass this dump about once every 3-4 weeks. |

I am watching it. It is a decent programme with a decent commentator. Basically its is about people living in slums trying to make a living from what they can. I have seen similar programmes from India to Brazil etc |

For me, the programme was a fascinating insight into a way of life so very alien to anything I have experienced. Hats off to the people, who out of necessity and opportunism, created livelihoods and a 'village' on a rubbish dump.
I agree with Buck Turgidson's post, amazing programme and very moving to watch. |

Not all of them. We saw one guy get hit over the head with a bottle and take another guy's eye out. We saw another try to short weigh, another taking notes out of a bundle so it was short, another stealing junk and then getting beaten up and kicked off the dump (he'd probably have been killed if the cameras weren't there), another refusing to return change to a guy who had just bought his scrap, etc, etc.
The culture of shitting on the other guy was alive and well, however much the narrator tried to gloss over it. |

I agree with devil_woman. Everyone was working hard in their own unique ways to irke a living. Thats the unique thing with slums all over the world. I watched one (i believe it was C4 Peter Boyle season) about the slums in Delhi. With regards to how they see the 'lads', i believe they won't have much regard for them. They will despise them because these scums want money the easy way and don't want to work for it like the rest of the society. |
