This mornings paper carried an article about the steps being taken to ensure the Bathurst 1000 4 day festival goes off without the problems a few drunken yobs can cause.

"Fans going to a motorsport festival have been warned of an alcohol crackdown - they can drink just 24 cans of beer per day. Those on "light" beer can bring 36 cans said officers policing the Bathurst 1000, a four day festival in New South Wales, Australia. Wine lovers must make do with four litres a day at the event. Asst Commisioner Alan clarke said 'Thousands of race fans enjoy the even and the police will not allow their safety to be compromised by a drunken few'".

Talk about developing a tolerance to alcohol, most people (ie non Aussies) would be incapable of standing after 4 litres of wine.

I got very drunk before the LeMans 24 hour race one year (by accident, we were trying to premix Smirnoff and orange by drinking the vodka to make room in the bottle for the orange), and unsilenced race cars do not mix well with a monster hangover. Evil or Very Mad

That is very tolerant. Shockingly tolerant. The no fun brigade over here would limit you to 0.4 litres, and 2.4 cans.

Is "light" beer lower in alcohol? (I don't drink, but I don't think it is in the USA.) Shocked

I thought it was just lower caloricly. You know the whole "Less filling" argument. Wink

I think you can be DEPORTED for those words!!! I can only get through TWO litres of crap wine in a setting, I'm gonna have to work HARDER on my alcohol tolerance. But then I don't do race cars, Bathurst or no

24 cans per day. That's one per hour. Deduct sleep time of, say, 12 hours, that's only one can every half an hour.

If I remember correctly, please correct me Yastreb or Murry, light beer is only 3.5% alcohol, usual is around 4.5% -5%?

24 cans a day isn't a great deal to go through on the Hill, we always had a spot at the bottom of Conrod Straight and by the time we left after the weekend there would be a nice wall of empties about a metre high around the camp site.

It does get hot there, and you do need to have a lot of fluids to prevent dehydration Very Happy

An item on the NZ news just the other day, just after this announcement had been made.

There has been some restriction on taking alcohol into Bathurst for a couple of years now, and Police have been impressed with the ingenuity of fans to overcome the limit. Last year 36 empty beer kegs were found on the hill after the race weekend. Fans had driven up the hill in the weeks before Bathurst (its an open road for the rest of the year) and buried their kegs close to where they intended siting their camp. Then they went to the race, dug in the appropriate place, and lo and behold, look what we've found, glug, glug.

This years a bit different, it's cold, and raining,.

But they checked every car, Yes EVERY CAR, for excessive amounts of piss, and drugs,, Must have taken hours to get into the place, and remember they started arriving on Wednesday.
Just consider the costs involved.. and the 1000 kilometer race generates millions of dollars for the town , No one's ever died [in the crowd] fights are at a minimum, I don't think anyone's ever had a baby on the mountain, there's probably been quite a few started though. So I can't really see why the over kill by the Cop's this year, was needed.

Don't know what channel the family in irishemigrant's posting were watching, but I saw the end of the race on free-to-air VHF here in the BOP.

How would you like to lose a podium place by 4 / 1000ths of a second after six hours plus of racing, that was the time between 3rd and 4th, first was only a second or so ahead.
