Hello,

I've been a fan of this site for a long time, and since I'm recently single, I joined a Jewish dating site called JDate. If I stay logged in long enough, I get an instant message from 20-30 year old (I'm 51), in somewhat formal english, asking me how I am doing. Their profiles usually state that they are from Florida, or Louisiana. And almost all say they're visiting Ghana. I look at their profile and see that most free form areas are blank, and since you need to pay to send emails, they almost always IM (IM's are free).

My goal is to waste their time for a while and report them to Jdate to get their profiles removed. They almost always try to lure me to use either Yahoo messenger or Yahoo email.

Anway, as I get them, I'll post the texts of our conversations, if anyone is interested.

Here's the first one:

If you really want to waste their time, don't tell them right off that you know they're a scammer...

Let them know you don't believe in "instant love" and need to get to know them better before you think you could fall in love...

They'll want to know what it is you need to know to fall in love...

Since they admit to being in Ghana, I'd ask a ton about the region, culture, foods, etc.

Ask about their family, parents, etc. (all who'll be dead or sick eventually)

Let them make BIG mistakes (spellings, locations of places, how things work) and don't mention it -- but when they make a little mistake (forgetting your " love " name, or some little detail) make a BIG thing out of it .(slap them)..

De-educate them -- I saw somewhere where a lad thought niagra falls was in florida or somewhere odd...this will help warn potential vics that the guy they're talking with doesn't know what he's talking about...

^^^ All very good suggestions, but one thing was forgotten:

DON'T DO ANY OF IT WITH YOUR REAL INFORMATION!

And even better than getting them banned from JDate, post their information at www.scamwarners.com and romance scams forums (like romancescam.com). That way, if someone is savvy enough to google the guy's (even if he's pretending to be a gal) details, he will pop up as a scammer.

If you get them banned from a dating site, they will simply sign up again under a different name, and any reports of the first name will not show up in searches on the new name. Confused

Yes, I totally forgot to warn you not to use your real details - set up an account with no real details (during sign up) that can trace back to you.

Read the stickies here on how to bait safely first, then read about how to trace headers - this helps you determine that this is really a scammer rather than an innocent third party (he says he's in california & the IP shows he's in Nigeria)... although if it says california or florida they may be in africa...they are learning to hide their IP's...then read the other stickies, they all have good information.

Safety measures are good to employ EVEN IF you aren't baiting. You don't want personal info anywhere if you are a single woman looking to meet someone.

Be sure to post e-mail addys, names used, headers, etc. on scamwarners and sites like that once you identify a scammer. If someone searches an e-mail address or a name, then they will come up as a fraud and let the person know to drop the scammer.
