Helmets and safety gear matter at any speed, barring being run over by an 18 wheeler or being stopped by a massive imovable object. (Bridge abutment, building, rock, tree, etc.
I used to corner marshal at motorcycle road races, and have seen road racers go flying through the air at 140 mph or better, slide hundreds of feet, and walk away. As long as they were not stopped by some solid piece of something, they were usually ok.
In the few, mostly minor motorcycle mishaps I've had, the last thing I noticed was the damage to my helmet. In every situation I never realized my head had contacted pavement, until I noticed the damage to the helmet later .
I'd rather the gouges and cracks be in my helmet, than in my skull. |

@Ms Mockinatrix. Everyone tells me I'm kinda thick headed anyway. Just kidding!
Is riding without a helmet one of the smarter things I do? Probably not! I just beleive its a personal decision and not my governments. I belong to a group that lobbies for motorcyclists rights and we seem to have to fight the helmet law issue on an almost yearly basis in my state. I have had a few wrecks over the years (and broken bones too) and luckily my melon is still intact.
By the way, I don't wear my seatbelt either and I am known to run with scissors from time to time. |

I've just got rid of this baby:
After riding it for a year I realised I'm too tall for it, thinking of what to buy next now. Maybe a Honda VFR .. |
