Hi,
Just purely out of curiosity do you keep a list/map of the physical locations of the lads. i keep seeing the same areas come up in email on my catcher account. i was thinking along the lines of Google earth you could use placemarks for everyone to see. this is just a thought. i did search on here first but found nothing about this so i am sorry if i missed a previous post about this |

To my knowledge, nobody has done this on any major scale - so if you want to give it a go and see if anyone wants to join in, feel free! My guesstimate is 50% Lagos, 25% rest of Nigeria, 15% other West Africa, 8% Vlads, 2% elsewhere - based on nothing more detailed than what I've had in my own box...it'd be good to collect some firmer figures and see how close my guestimates are |

In the past 7 months, I've responded to 136 individual Scammers. Of these, 13 were of an unknown location. Of the remaining 123, they were from (percentages rounded to whole numbers):
Senegal 32%
Nigeria 28%
Côte d'Ivoire 10%
Ghana 8%
Togo 6%
Benin 3%
Guinea-Bissau 2%
South Africa 2%
Spain 2%
And these at less than 1% (ie 1 Lad only from each of these locations):
Gabon
Guyana
China
Malaysia
India
Monaco
Russia
Netherlands
UK
All the above taken from non-proxy IP addresses, IP usually the or a major city. |

Interesting how Branwen's experience shows the most from Senegal. I wonder if that is because you generally respond to a certain kind of lad/scam.
I think it would be interesting to see a compilation of where the scams originate from and if there are more of certain kinds of scams coming out of certain countries. OK...I admit it, I am a bit of a geek when it comes to statistics. |

I think you have a point Harvestmoon, I was noticing a while back that a vast majority of my lads have been from Cote dIvore, with only a couple exceptions I can think of-- never Nigeria that I can recall. |

I can assure you that most of the really slick scam websites are from Eastern Europe. Mostly money laundering. |

if you reply to one scammer, you will get more emails from other lads.
and they will be scammers who know the first scammer.
so maybe that is another factor for the bias towards senegal. |

R2 is right, there will be some biases for all of us, not just from natural statistical variation, but also from where we seeded when and how, it would be fascinating to see the aggregations over bigger numbers. Maybe from surplus too? |

Good idea about Surplus. I'll do it, I love listmaking, and I've got all day more-or-less free, with only one character to write to Lads, as the others are either at work or conveniently out for the day (due to their Lads expecting to pick up the non-existant bank transfers - they can wail all day at the unattended mailboxes). I imagine it will take many hours, what with checking the mails in order to categorize them, and checking the IP addresses when the country of origin hasn't already been given. But I'll enjoy it. Statistics later! |

Unfortunately, the figure is always going to be corrupt as there are way too many variables. Branwen's figures for Senegal show this.
Statistically, there are many more lads in Nigeria than there are elsewhere.
The problem is that you won't necessarily be dealing with them as they're not personally sending you the mail or they might not come into play until further down the line.
Take a lad operating in somewhere like the UK or US for example.
What you're going to see is his IP. What you're not going to see is the team that he uses for garnering addresses, supplying accounts, formats, etc. And it also wouldn't take into account those lads who come into play further down the line. In my experience, for every lad in the West, there are dozens working for him out in Nigeria.
You've also got to analyse where the lad is getting your address from. For example, Branwen is getting a lot of Senegal lads. In my experience, Senegal sits firmly behind Nigeria, Ghana and the Ivory Coast for number of lads. So you'd have to look at where Branwen has seeded his address and why Senegal lads seem to be the ones getting hold of it. Possibly this is because it's being shared amongst the Senegal lad community. If this is the case, one could expect the same sort of hit on Nigerian lads, Ghana lads, etc if those other groups were passing his address round and this would mean that you're not really getting a true figure.
Even going to Surplus is not going to give that great an indicator. You've got to take into account the ways that those emails are gathered. AFAIK, most Eater members use the guestbook trick. So you'll probably find that a lot of those lads come from the first dozen or so guestbooks that come up on Google. If we speculate that those Guestbooks are targetted specifically by Ivory Coast lads, we're going to end up with the false figure for Ivory Coast lads being the biggest scamming group.
Like I said: too many variables. Not that you shouldn't try collating the figures, but just don't put too much faith in them. |

Oh, I agree: interesting, but meaningless.
Or meaninglessly interesting.
I'm entertaining myself with my listing from Surplus anyway! |

Results of Lad Locations in Surplus
After omitting all those in foreign languages, with no IP address, confusing (to me!) headers, Gmail or Microsoft/Hotmail IPs, satellite providers, and suspected or confirmed Proxys, I listed 332 mails.
These were from:
Nigeria - 34%
Benin - 7%
Cote d'Ivoire - 7%
