If I can decifer your post correctly, I would suggest looking on Amazon for their DRM free music, which will allow you to play it on your pc, put it on a portable player, or burn a copy for the car. |

I use soulseek to get stuff that's out of print/hard to find/too expensive to buy as a CD. It's free, the program is less than a mb in memory and have found heaps of stuff there.

I listen somewhat obsessively to legal live "bootlegs" - the Live Music Archive at archive.org . There are thousands of shows by bands who have given full permission for their live recordings to be shared for free in this manner. It does tend toward the Grateful Dead and even further on the hippie scale, but there's a lot of other music on there that might interest. |

This is old news but may be worth mentioning. I'd always heard that LimeWire was full of trojans, etc. I just googled it and found this short news clip on YouTube about music and video file sharing programs.
Also, for people who aren't IT savvy (like me), a lot of programs use 'My Documents' as the default folder where your personal stuff passwords, etc. might be. The clip is called Hacking LimeWire & shows how your personal info is accessed.

I would suggest to stay away from any and all forms of file-sharing. It is simply not worth the trouble of trojans/malware, legal issues and all too often incomplete albums or music with very poor sound quality.
Especially if other ways of downloading music are available, that is, via the many, many music blogs out there. Go to google blog search, and you will be able to find pretty much everything if you chose your search terms wisely. Generally you get complete albums in good quality, and you avoid the legal problems (the music industry goes after uploaders - and unlike with the various forms of p2p you do not have to upload if you want to pick up something from a blog)
You can listen to many, many complete albums for free and legally at deezer.com.
I think the best place for discovering new music by far is rateyourmusic.com - via the custom charts

Pandora online radio is also a nice place to discover/rediscover music based on music you know you like. Works pretty well and decent sound quality on all machines/connections I've tried. Even works nicely on the iPhone, so I don't think buffering requirements are huge.

Amazon even offers the occasional free download or five on their MP3 page. They seem to change them ever week, maybe? Mostly lesser known artists, but there's the odd classic song on offer, particularly around Christmas time. I was boycotting iTunes because of the DRM issues and have adored all my purchases from Amazon.
But I've heard iTunes has finally seen the light and eventually everything there will be DRM-free, like Amazon, and some songs will even be cheaper than Amazon's semi-standard 89 cents a track. |
