I have been working a bait for about a month now. I have referenced it a few times in other threads. The basic premise is that I am a reverend of a small church and my lad wants me to give him money to free up millions of dollars to do charitable work. Anyway, I intially tried to get him to work with my church but he seemed a bit spooked at the idea of bringing others into the transaction. I then told him that I would sell some precious heirlooms to raise the money but I continued to press him on letting my church help instead of relying on me alone. Today I got this e-mail:

Quote:
Dad,
I check on my other box, i see your email asking me if you should go to the church for this help, may yes, i only want to go out of this country and come to the usa and start new life and education.
if asking the church is the best way, you can see the person you trust among them and ask him to join us.
Thank you.
Johnson

This is completely out of character. His sudden willingness to work with the church came from out of nowhere. The talk of coming to the US is brand new.

If he wants to involve my church I am down with a group bait, but something smells fishy.

Thoughts?

I guarantee he will be asking for funds to fly. Does your church pay for new members airfares? He's just looking for a new angle because his initial scam appeared to have failed. He is testing the waters to see if you will like his 'idea' - Play along and see where he takes this. More likely he'll open a few extra doors for you to slam on his foot. Very Happy

Find out his exact location and tell him that you will pay for his airfare. There is a small airfield in the middle of ___(insert isolated town 400km away)___ where you have a Red Cross plane leaving with some missionaries. (of course we'll find a town without a airfield so he doesn't even accidentally get on a plane)

It still looks like early days but now he's opened the door for you.

Start working on him saying that you're now talking to the church and trying to find out what help they can offer. After a few more emails you can introduce a new "church" character and run with that one. Tell him you've done what you can but the church wants to help him personally. Once he believes he's talking to a clergyman you'll hopefully be able to get him to jump through hoops.

Don't worry about a group bait yet - you're doing fine on your own. And don't rush it. Build up slowly to involving your new character.

@ csudebate - Getting a lad to set up a new branch of a church is a lot of work the lads. Not all of them will do it. There are plots of land to find, engineering drawings to do, etc. The lad told you what he really wants, to get out of Africa where he can live higher off the hog in a less dangerous environment. So as NN and Slightly have said, go with the flow. Be flexible, relax, and go slow. Try to set up various scenarios for the lad to go through next so you have more options to take the bait.
I think you need another avatar, too. It makes me feel overwhelmed, anxious, and confused just looking at it. A baiter needs to be innocent like Nurse Nancy, confident and super-powered like Slightly, and cool as a cucumber like me. Cool

As said above, go with the flow, he had the same feeling as you had, this isn't going anywhere, lets try something new.
He gave you the option of getting in a new character (from the church) and restart the game. Discuss his options with him, apologize for getting it wrong the first time or congratulate him with his wise decision or both.
That safari option is a nice one or you'll end up with the WU game within a few emails again, make sure he gets his visa's, fills out the forms and get him on the move Twisted Evil
Have Fun.

Thanks for the feedback. Again, what struck me as odd was the complete 180 degree turn he made concerning church involvement. I should mention that though I was moving rather slow he still had every expectation of getting money out of my character.

I guess I should be happy as I have been pushing for church involvement all along and he finally caved. It gives me a chance to bring some help in.

In early e-mails I did mention that my church has missionaries spread throughout Africa. He was very interested in talking/meeting with them. But once he told me not to involve my church in the transaction I told him that putting him in touch with a missionary made no sense. At the very least, I have the foundation set for a safari.

I will regroup and make sure that he wants to be put in touch with the church funding board and our accountant.

Not wishing to sound like a pessimist, but you're a long way from there yet.
Concentrate on getting him comfortable with your church. Then get him involved deeper by telling him that you can only help him if he becomes a member. Maybe he'll have to undertake a ritual of some sort before he enters the flock?

It's very doubtful that he'll travel just to meet a missionary yet - even if he says he will. Use that in your favour - tell him that he's got to get more involved with the church before your guys will deign to meet him or hand over cash.
You've got to convince him that the church exists, convince him that the money exists and then convince him that the money is his for the taking. Wink

That is why I called it a 'foundation' for a safari. The fact that there are missionaries out there intruiged him early on so I know that down the road (far down the road) I can reintroduce them.

I did a group bait with Sir Scam Alot that taught me a lot about patience; about setting the hook and reeling them in slowly. It has been over a month with my new lad and we are still sorting out the details of how much money I need to send him and what he plans on doing with it. I introduced the missionaries early on just to add legitimacy to my church, he was the one that pushed for a meeting. His eagerness to get in touch with the missionaries is just ammunition I will store for a later date. For now, I need to discuss a bit of theology with him to make sure that he understands my church's positions of salvation and wickedness. I don't want him entering into an agreement with a church that adheres to doctrine with which he disagrees.

I replied:

Dear J0hnson,

I am a bit confused. Are you now telling me that I should hold off on selling my antiques to raise money and should instead forward your request to my church funding board? If so, I will do so immediately. Our church has brought many young men and women to the United States for educational purposes. I am sure you are a fine candidate for an educational grant. Would you still like to continue with the business transaction or would you now like to focus on coming to America?

In Christ,

R3verend Foucault

I am still curious about his abrupt shift. Like I said, I may have been moving slow but all signs pointed to him getting money out of me.

I think I am either dealing with two seperate lads or my guy has multiple personality disorder. First he wanted $80,000 and wanted nothing to do with my church. Then he went down to $5,800 and still wanted no church involvement. Then he asked to involve the church. Now, he only needs $2000 and asks that I keep the church out of it.
