The profile pic is of the talented UK actress Bella Emberg. As I didn't want a glamorous young girl that might draw an ITP in. The lad sent me the email within about 45 minutes of setting up the profile:

Biological clocks are ticking and there is no time to waste, I am sure that the nice young men would be able to pay for a nanny to help raise these children while you are at the lawn bowls, you may need to check on this though as lads sometimes are not so reliable Wink

I'm in 2 minds as to whether to bother with this lad because I don't know if he's intelligent enough to be any real threat to anyone? He sent an email an hour after I posted that profile, saying:

I wonder if he's even worth it? It might be better to leave him in circulation so he can be a warning to other women that there are scammers out there while I concentrate on a more 'convincing' scammer

I don't know if Gilbert is intelligent enough to be convincing to that many women anyway?

I know what you mean...I have one VERY dumb lad right now - he can't even finish the M7CN S3cur3 ...

but got a good photo trophy from him (the gay rattlesnake suit) & taking perverse joy in keeping track of his M7CN progress...

I figure as long as he's working as hard as he can (not very hard), and thinks he's going to have a payoff soon, then he's not bothering other people...

so guess it's up to you whether or not you can get him working on something with minimal effort from you, or if you just want to drop him. ..

lol, that's kind of why I think I might drop him. If he's not bright enough to be convincing then I'm not sure what good I'd be doing by keeping him busy.

I don't see that this guy has any chance of securing himself a victim so while baiting him might entertain me it wouldn't necessarily do anything useful...

Well I didn't expect this at all.

Bella Emberg is a wonderful, talented actress & comedienne, but she isn't sterotypically good looking and I thought I wouldn't get any genuine responses.

Anyway, a Canadian guy has emailed me and I'd love to know if he is genuine or not but I don't want to post his profile here as it feels kind of disrespectful to him.

He's not unattractive (at least I don't think so) but he's not a male-model type either and he has genuine seeming details and decent English.

He says he is mixed-race (father from Africa and mother from Canada) but he looks kind of Hawiian (sp?) to me. Tiny bit overweight, friendly-looking, seems nice.

I feel bad now.

My first instinct is to tell him that I've met someone already but that he's cute and he should beware of scammers and be careful on that site but my second instinct is to say as little as possible and not 'humiliate' him by talking to him from a persona that doesn't exist..

If anyone wants to see his profile please pm me and offer me your advice?

you have to remember lads are liars, that's how they make their money, of course they're going to use a picture of someone else...I'd check the IP addy...and they're going to sound reasonable at first ... I generally wait till 2nd or 3rd e-mail before dropping someone as "real"...

some clues they're a scammer:

- ip addy's
- bad poetry
- I love you within a couple e-mails
- mentioning they are alone - no parents, or siblings who can help them out
or they're taking care of a parent, sibling, or child with no help
- quickly wanting a cell number

Well thanks to the advice from here and the fact that he used the SAME birthday as a (really obvious) scammer that contacted me and I had a long conversation with last night, I think he might be a scammer after all.

I thought he seemed genuine. It was the picture that threw me I think. He's slightly overweight, middle aged and not really bad looking but no Brad Pitt either (heck, I'm no Angelina Jolie so I can't talk) but I think that if he is a scammer (I'm tentatively thinking that he is) that he could be a very convincing one. Imo anyway.

I wondered that too Becky. I noticed that he had lied about his age too, saying 48, then 58.

I know 'half caste' is a term that is used in the UK but I don't know about Canada. My son is half Caucasian and half Asian and if someone called him a 'half caste' I'd punch them - so I wasn't sure about that wording either?

I just figured, maybe that's the way they talk in Canada or maybe he was raised somewhere where the term was considered acceptable?

In the US, someone might say they are "bi-racial" or "mixed race"....if they said anything at all.

One more thing....he says he has "some college" but claims to be an engineer.

You could ask him about what kind of engineering he does. Or you could ask how the weather is right now in Canada. That's probably the quickest way to get a lad to tell you he's on a job in Africa.

The grammatical errors are not consistent with someone born and raised in Canada. Also as Becky pointed out, "some college" and "engineer" raise little red flags, especially combined with the salary range.

well my dad didn't go to college but he's an engineer. He was in the army for 30 years though so that's where he learned.

edit: but of course the guy didn't mention a military history so that probably is a red flag then maybe?

I know a few people working as engineers without degrees, but it is getting less common, and with the other inconsistencies, the claim becomes more of a red flag.

Besides, most engineers I know may make grammatical mistakes (not the same type, though) but they wouldn't make a math mistake like that!

It shouldn't take more than a few emails to establish whether he is a scammer (I vote yes).

I didn't take that as a maths mistake Dorothy, I thought he was just lying about his age but what you say about grammatical errors is certainly suspicious in his other profile even more so!
