Taking advantage of the early-morning hours and flipping thru the music channels...in the past hour heard,

Pray, how did we survive to reach adulthood ?!

How did we survive applies more to the fact that we no had seat belts, the government didn't put warning labels on everything, at 8 years old we would disappear all day and our parents didn't know where we were or what we did and had the best time of our lives.

I have always wondered what drugs the composer of MacArthur's Park was on when they wrote that song. "someone left the cake out in the rain and I can never make it again cause I don't have the recipe". Idiot, who leaves a cake in the rain. If it starts raining that's the first thing you grab.

I was wondering the other day what are the best songs to sing in a car with at least 3 passengers. To me it was a toss up between Hotel California and Bohemian Rhapsody.

We snorted with derision at seat belts, I think they were extras, I don't remember our cars having them.

I could hazard a guess at what the writer of McArthur Park was on, probably the same as Lennon when he went all 'goo goo g'joob' and 'Number 9' on us. (I am shocked to learn Jimmy Webb wrote that song, he wrote stuff I really like, such as 'Wichita Lineman')

I stopped being quite so dismissive of seatbelts after (a) headbutting the rear view mirror when I was thrown forward as the car braked to avoid a dumb pedestrian - still have the scar, and (b) losing a favourite cousin when he was flung from the car in a (low-speed) collision, struck his head on a culvert and died instantly - no-one else was hurt.

/\/\ Even if it wasn't law, I would never go in a car without a seat belt now, or ride a motorcycle without a helmet. The thought of driving unbelted with a huge sheet of glass in front of me is terrifying.

However we used to set off on family holidays with kids on Mum's knee, without a care in the world.

Tis a rare thing these days, getting stuck behind a car with the backseat full of kids hepped up on Fanta and Taytos progressively making ruder faces and gestures at whoever's in the car behind. How i miss those days! Laughing

Another favourite of mine from that era ( though it took me a few years to discover him ) is Gordon Giltrap Visionary and fear of the Dark. Brilliant albums.
I've seem him play live, fantastic, Lucifers Cage is amongst the best live music I've heard
(Seen Joni too in the 80s )

I can remember the nineties. But we had seatbelts then, of course. Still, we were told to "get the @#$% out of the house and go do something". I would go out and play and not be back until dark. Sometimes. Unless i was playing with legos.

Today parents are protective as hell with their kids. I don't think my cousins have ever had the joy of touching a hot stuff. I only did that once. My Whinnie the Pooh Bear had the joy of it himself, too. For the next many years I had him he had a nice burn mark on the side of his face.

*sigh* Good times.

But that's completely off topic if this thread is only about music. I am a huge fan of any 90's music though.

Forgive me for not being THAT old that I know of the 60's.

I think that nothing much has changed in terms of danger to kids. You had the wierdos, dangerous traffic and other dangers then (mid 70's onwards for me). It's just that the kids then realise that in some cases we were bloody lucky to survive intact and as parents we want to wrap our kids in tissue paper and pop where they will be safe.

When my kids started to go out to play on their own it was MY mother who would fret, kidnappers , peodos etc.
I had to remind her about the Moors murders which happened when I was a child.
Its the perception of danger than the actual risk that folk worry about.
When my kids started to walk to school it wasn't the main roads staffed with lollipop men/ladies that worried me but the area outside the school gates where parents double parked, ignored the no stopping zig zag lines and generally behaved like <boobies>

What we need is to go back to the 40's and 50's when times were simpler, kids were better behaved, and you could have fun with just what we found laying around.

I was too young in the 60's to not remember it. It's the 70's I have trouble with.
