First bait, got busted fast?

So, I am four mails into my first bait, just sent the second letter to the "Barrister", and not five minutes later I got this in my inbox:

So, I'm like wtf? I thought I was playing it very straight, haven't even got around to delivering the inital round of slaps. I guessed I'd baited a smart lad and f**ked up early, but how the heck did he bust me? Feigning innocence, I sent back :

Well P3t3r N0vel works fast and I immediately get this response:

This lad is obviously trying to scare me away from my new hobby, but of course I'm not scared, just confused. Where did I give myself away? What tipped him off? How could this have possibly happened so soon? It wasn't until I hit the reply button that I scrolled past a large blank space in P3t3r's message and happened upon this little doozy:

Then I had figured it all out.; My 12 year old daughter had seen my new hushmail addy over my shoulder and knew I had just started baiting. She went into her room and sent this from her computer just to F with me. She had me going for a minute. So I went to visit "P3t3r" in her room and we had a good laugh. 10 minutes later I got a response from the barrister, still on script, but progressing. No sign of a twig. I sent to P3t3r:

she sends back:

I told her she can have him when I am done with him, or she can go get her own. Of course I don't want her to do anything unsafe, but she is very smart and a hell of a writer and I think she would be very good at this. Looks like their will be some tag-team baiting in our future.

Show her the surplus forum, and help her find her own to bait. Just make sure she knows not to use any real-life details (she sounds like a smart kid, but just to be safe, you might want to go through one with her & help her make up fake details to use). Cool

We had a talk about it last night, and she was way ahead on the safe part. Even her regular e-mail account has none of her RL details.

This just in: Lad is busy this morning and we are beginning to get off script. Nothing great yet, I'll post it if it gets interesting.

On a serious note, I would not let her do it on her own yet. For now I would suggest having her sit with you and do it together, just to be sure she learns it the safe way.

Can't wait to read yours and her stuff in the published section!

Bear in mind that stuff here is not always suitable for a 12 year old and I have received mail from scammers containing pictures that make my stomach churn.

That said, I'm with the other voices here urging you to think seriously about this.
You can't predict what direction a lad is going to take. I've had graphic porn sent to me by a lad. Not to mention that as clever as your daughter is, I'd be concerned about her emotional/moral development. There's a difference between a grown adult baiting and lying to scammers, and letting a 12 year old do it. Wink

@Everybody: Thanks all for looking out. She is no fool and neither am I. She won't be flying solo, more of a team baiting thing. Good way for us to spend time together and have a little fun at some low-life's expense.

BTW, first Lad just twigged. Finally got around to sending him my contact info and couldn't resist using the number 419 in my address. Just called me a joker, not good enough for a sig line. Oh well, at least I wasted some of his time and annoyed him I'm sure. There's another one coming along any minute now...

Edit: Also changed the barrister's name from michael to michelle and mispelled barrister to read "barristard". it was either that or the 419 address that tipped him off. guess I should play it straight a bit longer

I agree with the others. I'm sure your daughter is a smart cookie, but I wouldn't allow her to correspond with ANYONE on the net, let alone these criminals.

bait safe and you cant go far wrong, but like the above posts say, dont say we didnt warn you if she gets some vulgar/obscene material in her inbox.

Being her father, I know exactly why each and every one of you are saying what you are saying, and I appreciate it being said. We could get into a whole parenting/ethics/whatever debate here but I won't. Thanks to all who replied.

In his defense - his daughter is probably safer corresponding with people on the net that she *knows* are criminals, than her peers that may unknowingly be corresponding with criminals in chat rooms or whatever thinking they are other kids Wink

Might be good for phone calls. I used a child in one of my baits. Actually it was a text to speech program called "Shit Talker". It has an option to modify the voice so I created a pretty convincing "child" voice and used it whenever my lad called.

This was supposedly my 10 year old nephew who was living with me after my brother was convicted of DUI. Every time the lad called, Jason would answer the phone and insult the him. Of course Uncle never believed the lad because his nephew was such a sweet child who would never do wrong. Jason actually was a precocious little snot who eventually chopped the lad's "dolla" and blackmailed him by threatening to tell Uncle that it was a scam. Just figured it would hurt all the more for the lad to be outsmarted by a child.

so when I was choosing my first bait I couldn't choose between two of them. when I sent the first mail out I accidently copied and pasted the wrong address. I figured my respose was so far out of line with this guy's scam that there was no way in hell he would reply, so I resent my mail to the right address and twigged that guy after two days. This morning I logged into my e-mail account and found this in my inbox:

this is interesting. I can go any direction at this point. I think I will write back with details of how the lawyer took my partner P3t3r and I's money and now we can't get ahold of him, thank him for handling this personally now and taking over for the other guy since he was incompetent, or something along those lines anyway. I won't get right back to him, I want to be sure I have a good story before I do. Looks like the ASEM may be a good way to skip all the boring inital contact stuff. I can make up anything I want at this point: travel arrangements already made, somebody is supposed to meet us somewhere to pick up the cash, where are the pics you promised, or whatever. I love it!
