Hi everyone!
I'm new as a contributor here so forgive me if I'm a little unsure of how this works... I'd just like to post some info on a possible (if rather amateurish scam) originating on Skype.
I use Skype a lot and set it to 'Skype Me!' mode to meet new people from around the world, the majority of whom are just keen to improve their English. However, recently I have been contacted by a 'Don' from Ghana, who skipped any pretence of trying to get to know me and went straight for asking for money.
His Skype name is aboagye54 - and he has 82 contacts so I doubt I'm the only person he's trying it on...
Following is an excerpt from the conversation, to give an idea of the tone...

He has since popped up a couple of times with the same request (he's asking for $200), and I have since blocked him.
I'm pretty certain this is an amateurish form of scam...?

I used to get loads of these. Of course it's a scam. Often they pretend to be females offering sex or nude photos in exchange.
Here's how I wound them up, more or less as below :
Me : Ghana is part of the British Empire isn't it? A colony?
Scammer : No, it's independent
Me : So that means you threw the British out?
Sc : Yes, we are not a colony any more
Me : Why?
Sc : We are independent now ...
Me : But when you were a colony you were rich and everything worked, and now it doesn't and you have to beg for money ....
Sc : Sorry I don't understand .....
etc ............. |

Very good reply, falnsb.
I get those on Skype also nowadays, and I am not in skypeMe mode. They must be randomly looking for online people.
Cheers |

Scamming via instant messaging is becoming more prevalent, although it can often just be a foot in the door for getting you onto the older tried and trusted scams. I heard of one lady in the USA recently who was approached on YIM and she started chatting to a guy who said he was in the UK. When she mentioned in one conversation that she tended to struggle for money, he put her in touch with a "friend" via email that did cheque payment processing scams.
I don't entertain people via IM if I don't already know them. I advise going even more carefully with new IM contacts than you would by email as it can be very fast moving and you have to think on your feet.
These people are baitable, but in my opinion it's not for the beginner. |

Skype is being increasingly used by Romance Scammers too. My wife gets loads... when she is not looking I say "I am using a friends computer... you sound hot too... please email me on [email protected] and we'll chat more"... then block them... |
