She almost caught me

Hi, I'm a single man who a week or two ago was contacted by a scammer. She emailed me on Myspace & said she saw my profile & wanted to get to know me, etc, etc. Here is the actual message:

Hi, my name is Rose..Its a pleasure to get in contact with you, i decided to send you this message after reading your profile which caught my attention. Anyway i will like to give you my personal email address so that you can contact me direct for us to know more about each other. my address: rosemarryo{AT} Y-a-h-o-o-.-c-o-m Hope to hear from you soon. Rose E-mail Address: yahoo.com rosemarryo@ Y O O O
Instant Messenger im: rosemarryo and am online right now.

I then sent her a message and almost right away we started chatting on Yahoo IM. She said she was about 29, single and living with her mother & younger brother in Ghana. She was an accountant who worked for her uncle part time, was supporting her family and she was looking to get to know me. So I got excited and started a friendship. About the 3rd chat she asked me about 50 questions everything from life to love to sex and after every answer she said I was the man of her dreams. About the 4th chat she proclaimed her love for me and she wanted to come to America to meet me and be with me. The whole time she wanted my phone number but I never gave it to her. We exchanged pictures on I.M. which her's were beautiful I must say. She then started to ask again that she wanted to meet me and she wanted to come here to be with me as my wife. I was like heck yeah but then she wanted money for a visa,passport & airline ticket and my mood dropped. I never met you but you are asking me for money???

After that our chats involved her asking me for the money to come here but my feeble attempts to suggest for me to come to her were shot down. This past Saturday we had our first webcam chat where I got to see her in action. She kept pushing the issue for the visa and I always made excuses. We ended our webcam chat & I never heard from her since Saturday. I'll admit that I developed feelings for this person who I seen pictures of and I guess chatted with. She has a Facebook page with about 100 pictures of herself and her name is Rosemary Opoku Duffie on Facebook. She has about 500 friends there but I wonder if any of them know what she's up to.

Sounds like you came across a common scammer -- good for you to wise up before you sent her money...

It takes more than a couple weeks (months) to "fall" in love...
I know real life ppl who want to meet and it took them years to come to that point (and they're paying their own way)...so it does happen, just not that fast...

I have to wonder what "she" would have said if you told her that you had an attorney who was going to help with the VISA / immigration forms/papers and that when it came time that you would have her nonrefundable ticket purchased for her at the airport. These crooks are evil, they steal people's emotions and love and then go for their wallet!!
So glad that you knew it was not right and that you did not give "her"/ it any $$. Just goes to show you what it was really after, it's "love" took a dive after it realized that you were not going to fund it!!!

i understand how u feel i too recently been scammed
and u do have ur hopes up they r so good at what they do they tell u everything u want to hear they really know how to tug at ur heart strings and make u believe
luckily i too did not give any money but if i had it at the time may have
but the relationship ended very fast after no money was received by him

She just contacted me after a long weekend claiming she had Malaria. I'm still just trying to play the role of boyfriend/husband to be but I'm sticking to my guns and not sending money. But I just don't understand how they could play at yr heart strings and then leave you hanging. I feel like a poor sucker almost because I do have feelings involved but I know the end result won't be good. They have to be the lowest form of life to play with people's hearts and wallets and not to mention they give Africa a bad name.

I still don't understand and if anyone could tell me is why she has a Facebook page with all those pictues. Why is she putting herself out there like that. Wouldn't a scammer use as little as info as they can about themselves? If I wanted to I could post mean things about her on her own page and alert Facebook admin about her.

These are the one who changed me from being a lurker to a proper baiter! Romance scams erk me the most of all.

Unfortunately Facebook didn't even respond when I reported the Mugu must pay page... Evil or Very Mad

That's easy. "She" would have been in an accident on the way to the airport, and the "doctor" would email, saying $ are needed for life-saving surgery. Or "she" would be robbed on the way to the airport. Or "she" would be all upset when she found out that she was required to pay a fee of $XX in order to leave the country. There are about a thousand other options, but you get the idea.

Because it makes her look more authentic. The name may or may not be real. It is possible that the photos are not hers either, as many scammers are now learning how to fake webcam. Many scammers choose porn models with thousands of available photos, others copy real social networking pages with lots of photo choices.

But what's the worst that can happen? After several complaints, Facebook deletes her profile, and she creates a new one under another name. Compared to the possibility of hittting a gold mine, it is probably a risk she considers worth taking. As you said, you can put nasty comments on her page, but she can delete them anyway.

I'm new to this, how do they fake webcam appearances? I know with her she did set up a time and day for us to be on webcam & she showed up late.

They must be more sophisticated than I thought.

I just reported it too, I think you need multiple people to be upset and report it before they actually look into it. Mad

facebook is full of lads all of mine have profiles and alot of times they will have a female with them to go in front of the cam while he is out of view. A real person will never request money, I am so glad you didnt send any Very Happy

Sorry, just noticed this question hasn't been answered. Scammers are like cockroaches and bacteria! As our defenses against them advance, they change to adapt and survive! So as more people have learned that they shouldn't trust people they haven't seen on cam, more scammers have learned how to fake webcam. It's pretty easy, really.

Just pick a person (most often porn actress) and download all the video you can of her. Then just pick one of many software applications designed to fake webcam (even cnet carries some), do a little customizing, and voila! You have a nice little webcam session.

Some scammers even make money off other scammers selling them fake webcam software...
