Are the female scammers typically males?

I've started baiting a couple attractive women from Russia, and find myself laughing a lot as I read through the posts on this dating scam forum. But I'm left wondering something. I know that the majority of the women in the pictures are not the women running the scams. However has anyone been able to determine if the romance scams are usually being done by men posing as women? Or is it women who are using pictures of other females? I guess in the big picture it doesn't matter since they use so many prefabricated emails/scripts, and I'll never meet the women I bait (thank goodness!), but I can't help feeling curious about the person on the other end.

We estimate that less than 5% of the Russian "ladies" are ladies at all. Those that are are usually lower tier scammers. The women int he pictures are either nothign at all to do with the scammer (as in stolen pictures) or the girlfriend etc. of the scammer.

Also, have you noticed that all those russian scammer characters are girls? I've never seen a male russian character, does that exist? (Plenty of US male characters though.) No way that only women are into the scamming business in Russia, so a lot of them have to be men.

Does anyone know some trick to find out the real gender of the scammer?

I have seen some on other sites, but most of those are aimed at other men not women.
