Look what I found Twisted Evil

Quote:
Swimming is a Skill More Blacks Must Master
An excerpt from an excellent article by Tonyaa Weathersbee in BlackAmericaWeb:

According to the Centers for Disease Control, in 2000, black people drowned 1.4 times as much as white people. That rate, however, increases for black children ages 5 to 19; they drown 2.4 times as much. Black adolescent males are 12 to 15 times more likely to drown than white adolescent males.

Now there are gripping historical and cultural reasons behind why black people wind up being non-swimmers. The indifference toward swimming, some say, originates from the days of segregation, when black people were banned from public swimming pools, and most were too poor to afford private pools. Today, black people often cannot afford to pay for swimming lessons, and although free and reduced price lessons are available in many places, many black people still dont view swimming as a priority.

Swimming is, by and large, still viewed by many black people as a sport rather than a skill and a sport that they arent very good at. That means that until a Tiger Woods emerges from the competitive swimming world, many black parents wont be clamoring to demand lessons for their children. Then theres our obsession with protecting our hairstyles rather than learning how to protect ourselves from drowning.

Its time we got over that.

Ask him if he's had swimming lessons Laughing

Actually, some Africans are actually afraid of the water because they believe a spirit lives in it (sort of like Lady of the Water)!

I remember reading this on a thread here about a year or so ago. Can't remember what the spirit's name is, but there is one.

Am loving this.

Was in a bad mood earlier cos I had to come in to work this weekend.

Totally cheered up now Smile. Some one out there is having a far worse day lo.

Can still barely register that some where out there, right now, that guy's standing on a beach looking for an allusive trunk box.

Indeed, truely inspired.

Is there any way it can be suggested for Tony to rent a boat? It surely would be easier than running up the beach for hours on end. Twisted Evil

YW,
how about having the 'sats used' go down and the 'accuracy' go up (that is less acurate) and have the co-ordinates wander around wildly every now and then.

The trunk box could be sinking slowly , so satellite coverage gets worse so accuracy gets worse.

Will make it more plausible that he cannot see the box if the GPS is not reliable methinks. Twisted Evil

I read somewhere in this thread that the mugus have some friend who knows a lot about GPS. If this guy sees the 'satellites used' and 'accuracy' never changing he willbecome suspicious. For sure I would and I probably don't know as much as him about GPS.

Wiith a GPS bobbing about in those betiful breakers it might be a little difficult to keep lock on 8 sats continuously.

An idea for later on would be for you to slap him for setting the wrong 'Datum' on his GPS, and that has caused all his readings to be 300metres to the southeast or something and no wonder he couldn't see the box.

Another incredible safari YW Very Happy

Can't wait to see how this one plays out. According to the last communication, they still seem pretty optimistic about being able to retrieve the loot and since Tony can *see* it, I'm sure this one is far from over Laughing

I can't believe that this bait turned out to work so well. I have absolutely no doubt that he is really running up and down the beach in the middle of the desert at the end of the world, looking for a floating trunkbox.

Priceless.

I'm glad he can see the box in the water. They must have been out there so long that they are getting delusional. Or maybe a crate of some sort dropped. It'd be funny as hell if it was a crate full of diamonds from one of the mines.

It'd be much better if it was spoiled food. Whoops, tracking the wrong crate, hang on... 200km north.

Tell him to draw a big "X" on the beach so he can find the spot again where he can see the box, and then go and rent a boat to fetch it... you don't need to be afraid of 8 foot surf and sharks, really you don't. And he can tell the boat captain that it is some personal belongings just like a good trunkbox should contain.

Or barring that he could call in the South African Coast Guard and tell them his personal belongings have drifted out to sea, and see if they can rustle up a cutter to go out and fetch them... my understanding is that the Southa African military organizations are very helpful and always put customer service first, expecially for visiotrs from outside of South Africa.

Of course- I notice there are a couple of special "Diamond Areas" just south of where the box is floating around... I sure wouldn't want him to get picked up trespassing on diamond lands... that wouldn't be good at all.

He might also want to bone up on some local lore because there will be atest when he gets back home...

The funny thing about shapes and shadows is that people will see that which they are looking for in a random distribution setting.

For example, if you buy a certain model of car, suddenly you'll see them everywhere on the road, where you never saw them before.

In our friend's case, he's looking for a black box - and the part he's keen to see is the corners bobbing up and down - against something that's fairly monochrome with random shapes and shadows.

Add in that he's probably not practiced on how to scan environments like that without burning out the visual purple in his eyes.

He is in fact seeing the box. That it is just the shadow cast by waves doesn't matter.

Better still, the longer he stares at it's location, the easier it is to see, as the shadows become darker to his eyes.

Bonus plan: if he moves to get a different perspective, the effect is broken and it's lost....until he stares at the ocean rather fixedly for a good minute or so, at which point he'll see it again.

It's a beautiful thing!

Laughing

Rupert Gould, chronicler of the unsual and saviour of the Harrison clocks, called the effect Dart referred to "expectant attention" - or to use a modernism, "I wouldn't have seen it if I hadn't believed it".

It's been chronicled with the Loch Ness Monster, UFOs, ghosts, and so many other things.

But to other things - we need a catchy name for this safari, after the success of The Get Rich Project/Mugus in the Mist. I've been thinking hard, but nothing short and pithy comes to mind. Anyone got a title in mind?

Beautiful work YW. One of your quicker safaris, but a great safari anyways. I just hope it ends with the lad having to answer to his in-laws about the missing person.

It would be extremely convenient if the currents would stop the box for a while and move it closer to the beach during ebb. Maybe it sits on a rock? The mugu could take a small risk and wade into the ocean to reach it when the water level is low.

wow dart, that is pretty interesting. how do you know so much about that? Have you ever stared at a fuzzy tv screen for a while? you will start to see shapes and swirls and stuff. I am guessing that is the same concept sort of.

YW, tell him that you fitted a big fin on the top of the box. so if he sees any fins circling around in the water, he should swim towards them.
