Often, throughout the day, I will get an IM from someone with an unrecognizeable name, and it just says "Hi" or "want to chat" or something... like that.

ie: regier yi 3106: Hi Smile

I usually just block without answering. Anyone know what these are all about? Are these 419 scammers trolling, or is this something else?

If so, they dropped line in the wrong place!

thanks,

adam

It could be a romance scammer. That's how they often contact me (and regret it after Twisted Evil ), but it could be any number of things.

Not as much as I used to, but sometimes one comes along that deserves some very special attention.

I get a large amount of these through ICQ. It seems they are sent from an automated system which responds with an advert, usually for male enhancement products, as soon as you reply to the initial spammed message.

I get those quite often. I hang out in chat rooms waiting for scammers, and suddenly a drive by Porn Bot. lots of times the Porn bots are completely automated. You say howdy back, sometimes they ask some "typical questions" then send you a link to some midget porn site.

Or that's just what happens to me.

I almost spit MT Dew on my monitor when I saw the text above your lovable little puppy.

A couple of my bait addresses are SMAACMSpanky and SlapMyAssAndCallMeSpanky.

as far as the midget porn links. I'm sure I'll have one or two by morning

I was going to say that it sounds like spyware, but you guys beat me to it. Some spyware programs use Windows Messenger (not MSN Messenger) to lead you to shady sites, and this sounds similar.
