The scene: My first scambait has hit a brief lull, so while waiting for my time to strike, my mentor suggests grabbing a few E-mails from the spare lads section and trying an ASEM. I believe the top three are a trunk box scam, a lottery scam, and a Bibles for sale scam. Read the E-mail I sent to the three of them and take a guess which one responded.

Hey, what's the deal? I haven't heard from you in
almost a week! You told me you got the first payment,
and then every E-mail I sent to your account bounced!
Are you using a new account now? I don't know what
this new deal you're talking about is... we've got
business to finish here! Get back to me and tell me
what I have to do next.

Yes, the correct answer was the Bible scammer. Here, for your edification, are the full headers minus the forum blowout line.

Keith,

i am sorry for the delay, but i need to inform you that i have to get some documents approved and i need an attorney here to get this done and i cannot afford the fees of $3500 he is charging to get this done.I was really ashamed of telling you.
Please let me know if you are still in this transaction with me.ok.

OK... Iíll let him know, in true ASEM fashion.

What? Is that another $3500 on top of the $5000 I
already sent you, which you said was enough to cover
the barrister's fees? You know, I'm really wondering
whether you picked the right guy for the job. Has he
actually done anything right yet? We've thrown money
at him, seen no documents, and now he's asking for
more money? I think that guy's some kind of crook.
Tell him I'm not sending him any more money unless he
contacts me directly and tells me why he needs it.

I can understand why you were worried... it IS
disturbing news. But you're the one who's been
stressing all along that we need to be in constant
communication. Try to keep up... this is an important
deal.

Normally, they defend the apparently crooked lawyer and assure you that heís on the level, but observe what happens when itís not a character he created:

Thank you for your email.
I am so sorry for what is happening and i must also tell you that i have decided to sue the attorney and I have found out that he is not telling the truth because i have made adequate enquiries and all he says is not the truth.
i will like you to recomfirm your telephone number to me so that i can give you a call to explain better.
I have been able to meet with someone else that is willing to do all documents for $2800 and nothing more.I am ready to send to you the contact informations of the second attorney.
please try all that you can to make this happen this time.I am sueing the first lawyer and i will keep you inform as we progress.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Well, good. Paying the new attorney to sue the old one. I can handle that. Letís make that ďpaymentĒ.

Anyway, to get the ball rolling on this lawsuit so we
can get our money back, AND finally finish this
transaction, I've gone ahead and sent you the $2800
and faxed you the pickup information, like before. My
phone number's ###-###-####... write it down somewhere
this time, or save the E-mail. And watch this new
attorney like a hawk. I don't want any more money to

Oops... seems that I accidentally sent this E-mail to a Vincent Adebayo who couldnít collect the money sent to the original Vincent Adebayo. Shame itís such a common name.

Well, you should have told me you weren't there before
I sent the payment. I'll have to wait a few hours
before the local office opens so I can recall the
payment. See, this is what happens when you don't keep
in touch.

Apparently, your attorney needs to learn how to use a
telephone. I guess they don't have them in Nigeria or
something. I told you not to go for the cheap guy. Now
you've got another incompetent attorney working for
you. This does not impress me, Vincent.

I sent that one twice, probably because my first lad sent me something about six times just then. Then a mild slap for the idiot lawyer. (Iíd say ďisnít that redundant?Ē but I know there are a few legitimate attorneys here.)

they all said the same thing. The money transfer was
picked up already, not long after I sent it, by the

you just need to tell him to send the money to the new
attorney, and we'll be able to get things moving. Keep

Keith,

I have got bad news.
The same secretary is now on the run, because i lean't he got fired some days back and he only arrived to the office to pick up his things when he saw your payment instructions, picked up the cash and vanished into thing air.

Please my very good friend i am so confused now because there is time limit now because the new attorney who have offered his assistance will be going on a course next week and he will need to get this documents done latest on Wednessday.
I have made former report to the Police authority and they are on the look out for the secretary, but we do not have to waste any time. Please do try and raise another $2800 and have it sent to the new attorney so that he can get the documents prepared.I am really soory for the inconveviences.Let the bill be on me because i will be paying you back as soon as the transfer is made. You go ahead and get a loan if you do not have the money, this is our last opportunity to get this done.
As you know i have sued the former attorney and the case will be coming up fpr hearing soon.

Please try all you can.I am counting on you.
My best regards.

The Adinka calls me. Thereís a strange female voice at the start of the message saying something like ďHow long are you going to be here, sweetie?Ē and then the Dishonorable Barrister himself begins to speak.

The phone message wrote:
Is this (something... doesn't sound much like "Nambla" to me)? This is Barrister Adeyinka Opeyemi calling from Nigeria. I was asked to contact you so that I will be able to (something) on the transaction we talk about. (He mumbles a bit. Doctor Tijanksi or something?) And we can black out any immediately. From Barrister, I'll be in touch, okay. Bye bye.

And just in case I bought an answering machine just for the pretty blinking lights:

Impatient much! For the guy who spent a week and a
half too ashamed to admit he needed money, you sure
don't give a guy time to breathe, do you? It just so
happens that this past weekend was a holiday weekend
(Independence Day... you might have heard of it), so
my family got together to celebrate while all the
financial institutions were closed.

Look, it's simple. If I'm sending money to someone
new, I need another transfer form. If you've got the
one I sent you before, fax or E-mail it to the new guy
and we're on our way. Otherwise, I'll have to get a
new form and E-mail it to him, and I can't do that
until tomorrow thanks to the stupid bankers' hours. I
appreciate that we're working under a tight deadline,
but your lawyer picked a heck of a time to take a
course. How much time is he going to have once we get
the money to him to devote to us? You might be better
off finding someone else to handle the transaction if
Adinka's going to be busy. Let me know when you've got
an attorney who can do the job, and I'll send the
form.

Yep. The transfer form. I figure itís about time I ask Marvinator to create one for me. But first, to address that phone message. I want a pass phrase.

in the middle of jobs they've been paid to do.

Did my partner send you the form for corporate release
of funds? You'll have to fill that out before I can
secure the money for you. I don't know whether it
would be better to make it look like a new
transaction, so there are no questions about why I
need so much money for a single transaction, or to
make it more of the same transaction, so I don't have
a transaction with a negative balance on the books.
What do you think I should do?

I ask a question to delay things just a bit while we wait for Marv to supply a suitable form. Now for Vincent.

Independence Day isn't just a holiday. It's a
celebration of everything that makes America great.
All the freedoms we have are encapsulated in one
glorious document that every schoolchild learns by
heart - the script from the original Star Wars. Have
you read it, or watched the movie? Sure, Darth Vader
ended up being Luke's father in the second one, and
the third one had Princess Leia in that slave outfit,
but the first one was a true classic of American
cinema, second only to the monumental and incomparably
influential "Duck Soup". Our annual film festival is
only a small part of the celebration... we also blow
many things up. And we shoot fireworks.

With that said, I'm glad Adinka is reliable. I'd be
worried if I found out you were associating with
another criminal. Crimes of opportunity are crimes of
passion... and both look pretty bad on a resume. Keep
that in mind, because we have to complete this
transaction legally and quickly. I already need to
recover $7800 before our audit at the end of the
fiscal year, or there will be questions, and questions
can provoke answers, which provoke further questions
and then inquiries, inquests, and incarceration. I'm
sure you don't want that.

Adinka canít even pretend to pretend to be a lawyer and answer my simple question.

I don't have a preference... it's a legal issue.
You're the attorney who's being paid to provide
documents and legal advice. I asked you, as my lawyer,
for your legal advice. You are going to perform the
job you're being paid for, aren't you? And considering
that this information is vital to you being paid, I'd
expect you'd want to help me cut through the red tape
here. You know how these things work.

Yes, you need to fill out a form to get money. My
company's accounting department keeps track of all the
money moving in and out, and I need to provide the
paperwork for that. Then, once the allocation is
approved, they cut me a check to send to you. That's
how business works. Here's a copy of the form. Get it
back to me as soon as you can and I'll take care of
the rest.

At this point, itís time for me to take a real life business trip for a week, and when I get back, my computerís power supply is dead. Neither of my ongoing baits produces any results in the meantime. Once Iím finally back up and running, itís long past time for a slap.
