Okay.. Who of you like REAL oldschool gaming? Where the gameplay is deep, and the graphics are all ASCII characters?
I've been getting into (again) Angband! http://www.thangorodrim.net/
I've tried Rouge before, and while I enjoy it, it doesn't match up to Angband! (Zangband is unique in its own way, as well)
Admit it, who's addicted to this oldshool gaming? |

Angband is great but I haven't played it much since I moved onto Runescape. I did try playing it with graphics (with icons instead of Ascii) but it lost its charm. |

ZORK! I love it. A group of about 5 or 6 of us used to play that on a friends brand new
Apple ][ (you figure out how long ago that was). We even bought the special hint book where all the answers were invisible until you hi-lighted them with a special pen.
A few years ago, I was feeling nastolgic for some of my old games, so I managed to track down a few of them on the net. Zork, Xenos, TradeWars...of course I haven't played them since I signed up here at the Eater!
If anyone is interested, I think they are still installed on one of my computers. |

I remember playing a text adventure on one of these things at school in 1981:
Most people then didn't even know what a computer was (including me). I believe some Commodore guy was demonstrating this thing around schools as part of some kind of introductory programme.
The game may have been some version of the old Classic Adventure or Colossal Cave. I fell down a pit and died, as I recall! |

I am the original old school gamer. I was old school before it was cool. I still have an Atari 2600 with about 130 games plugged into a TV in the basement.
My wife bought me a GameBoy Advance and Gamecube and I use these to play old school games. I have old school compilation games on the Gamecube and I download freeware classic games and emulators on my GBA with a special flash ROM cartridge.
On my GBA, I have:
Chaos: The Battle of Wizards
Hack
Rogue
Sierra AGI Graphic Adventures (King's Quest, Leisure Suit Larry, etc)
Interactive Fiction games (The Pawn, Zork trilogy, Scott Adams' adventures: The Count, The Hulk, etc)
Another World
Coleco Vision Emulator (games: Zaxxon, Carnival, the Smurfs, etc)
ZX Spectrum Emulator (games: Empire Strikes Back, Batty, Way of Exploding Fist, etc)
MAME Arcade Emulator (games: Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Phoenix, etc)
Gameboy Emulator (games: Adventure Island, Double Dragon, etc)
NES Emulator (games: Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!!, Super Mario Bros. etc)
In all, I have about 400 old school games on my Gameboy. |

Max P, that used to be my favorite game. I was also a big fan of the arcade game Centipede. They've come out with a lot of these for various systems as Travington has pointed out. You just can't play Centipede w/out a trackball though. |

I played some of the Infocom text adventures on a TRS 80, which I thought was really cool because it had 48K of memory instead of 16k, and TWO floppy drives instead of one (no hard drive of course).
My first summer job during law school, I took that TRS 80 to my office and typed briefs on it. The people in the office were amazed - they had no experience with word processing. They actually ended up filing a couple things printed off my dot matrix printer. |

Please don't necro old topics, the last post before yours was on Jul 21, 2005, please frequent yourself with the *** 419 EATER FORUM RULES AND F.A.Q. PLEASE READ ***
Quote: |
Please avoid thread necromancy (that is: posting in a thread that has been inactive for several months to bump it back to the top again). Old threads have usually little relevance anymore. Also, members that posted in it may not be around anymore. If you really want to bring up an old discussion again because you have something of value to add, post a new thread and put a link in it to the old thread. That way people do not have to read through all the old posts to see what is new. |
I'll split the necro posts off after leaving it locked for a while so you can read this. |
