I was reading this front page story today in the Toronto newspaper about people who got scammed. I don't recognise the name of the company but recognised the nature of the scam.

Sometimes when baiting "loan lads" I wonder if it makes a difference. Or if doing site kills for fake banks, wondering if it matters too. Then you read a story like the link above and realise that yes, it really does. I'll never know how many people a site kill unknowingly helped. Or by frustrating a loan lad if it helped keep someone else from falling into the trap. But stories like this help demonstrate why it's important to keep doing this.

I joined the site thinking scambaiting was "fun". It can be. But stories like this show how real people get hurt by this stuff everyday, and why it's important to keep at it.

Yes, it matters. Last year not too far from where I live a homeless man was stabbed to death, apparently by a couple of would-be 'tough guys'. It took two of the 20-something-year-olds to pull a 68-year-old retired bus driver from the car he was living in and despatch him. Real hard men...

Take a look on Scamwarners and you'll see topics with hundreds or thousands of views over the course of the last year or so. Each of those views is potentially a victim saved - that is real lad pain, victims just disappearing and they don't have clue why.

And it only takes a minute or 2 to post a scam format at SW.

I contacted the writer of the article yesterday and told him about Scamwarners and urged him to get the victims to post details.
It won't get their money back but hopefully save someone else from a similar fate.
