Dear Starbuck,

I see that you always use the EU word. What does it mean?

I read the link carefully however I do not get the whole point.

Meaning nowadays if you have a real shop selling stuff (like tables and chairs for instance) and someone is paying you with credit or debit cards you know immediately if the money has been deducted or not. So as businessman/shopowner where is the problem? I do not think any businessman is much interested in all the details and most of the times he will never realize that someone is using someone'else card. Unless later on the bank will ask for refund since it was a fraud and the shopowner didn't take the necessary precautions. Is this the case?

If the scammer presents the full valid details of the card and it hasn't been reported as stolen then initial processing could go through and it isn't until the cardholder notices the fraudulent charge that the bank will be alerted.

That is why card scammers are so keen to proceed quickly - they know that the cards they are using will have a limited life before the transactions get reversed.

And EU is Eater University - the locked forum at the bottom of the list.

thanks for your input.

So the trick/scam, if I understand correctly, is the fact that the scammers would be stealing the money from the shop-owner basically and not from the credit card holder (since the bank would reverse the transaction). Is it correct?
However I still do not get the whole picture.
Example:

I'm a crook from a foreign country and I got your credit card details why don't I simply use the fund on it without going to this extent?

Is it because the scammers got even more greedy and they want to steal twice? or they do not want to get caught directly so they are making this charade?

Sorry but it is very new to me this kind of scam.

The scammer has no simple way of cashing out the balance of the card.

If you got my credit card details then trying to use it in a local physical shop would be out of the question as you don't have a physical card and also (if you copied the details to a blank card), the transaction would probably be flagged by the card company as overseas.

Similarly, if you went to Amazon or somewhere and tried to order some high value electronics through their normal shopping basket and get them shipped to you then that would also likely get flagged before the items ship as you would want the item shipped to an address other than the registered one.

So, what the scammer has to resort to usually is just getting a small payment off of the card by getting the merchant to charge extra for the shipping (or some other service) and send the money by Western Union to their fake shipper (or similar). If they are lucky then they will have just enough time before the card is flagged to pressure the merchant into sending the money.

thanks for your reply. I start to understand a bit more now but this scam looks more advanced than the trunk of money left in Lagos by my great-great grandfather...

I feel pity for the innocent shopowner stuck with explanation to the bank after they reported to the bank as scam but they didn't pay any money.

Still a shitty day at work I guess.

I offered him different boats to hire, he picked the most expensive one, of course. Few emails back and forth and he asked me to over charge his credit card. I first hesitated to do so but then agreed to help my customer... Smile

He has been sending me CC since then. Most of the time I've been telling him the CC was declined for some reason, however to keep him on the hook I let him know I was able to charge something from a card.

When you receive CC details you post them here with only first and last four digits visible so in case other baiter receives the same card, he is able to give him the same excuse.
