Can you share some tips on how to avoid these scams? Also, can we catch the culprits behind these?

Hi Gustav and welcome!

There are so many variation that it's impossible to list them. If you take a walk over to our sister site, ScamWarners, you can find the details of many scams-people post their emails.

As a general rule:

1) If it sounds too good to be true, it is.
2) Never pay in advance for goods and services-Scammers typically tell you you have to send money for courier fees, delivery charges or taxes.

3) If you are asked to pay via MoneyGram, WesternUnion or other other money transfer service, it is almost certainly a scammer.

4) If you have lost money to a scammer, it is virtually impossible to get it back. If you have used a bank transfer and act quickly, you might have a chance.

5) Never give out your personal information such a credit card info, banking details or Paypal information. Unauthorized charges can be made to these accounts and even worse, they can be used by the scammer for money laundering.

6) Sadly, prosecution is rare. Scammers are all over the world with concentrations in West Africa, Malaysia, Eastern Europe etc. The odds are the scammers are not in your jurisdiction and law enforcement can't do much.

Why don't you give a look to the Stickies in Main and HHT? There are FAQ sections that can help.
