Holmie has (yet..) another birthday on Sunday and lunch with a mate today turned into a game of "remember-when's". A few of mine were.....

- you didn't wake up 2 times a night for loo trips
- retirement planning was something for "old farts"
- it didn't take a few minutes each night to set out the next day's medications
- movie stunts were done by real people
- you left the house at 10 pm to go out; now you go to bed...
- your old clothes are back in fashion

* cars were loud xrududu
* all telephones were rotary
* the clocks in school, on Adenauer and Auerbach Days. went through some routine that involved the minute hand turning as if it were the second hand
* we calculated with slide rules

*Maybe somebody else noticed this: the 1975 movie Rollerball with James Caan and John Houseman was supposedly set in the year 2018. Throughout the film were wall mounted flat computer screens, all in monochrome.

^ I remember our first computer which was painfully slow. I'm a 90's kid (1996) so the farest back I can remember is 256kb RAM computers and Windows 98. When I was about 5 we got our first computer which had something like a 40GB HDD and XP with about 256kb of RAM, but now nearly 14 years later my PC which I built has 16GB RAM with a 1TB SSD and my laptop has 6GB of RAM and 500GB SSD.

I'm probably one of the youngest members but this post makes me feel old Shocked

Congo became Zaïre. I don't remember abacosts, but I remember seeing a newspaper article about how to pronounce it, which was unnecessary for me, as I had been reading French for about five years and knew what a dieresis is.

- you had to wait for you computer to dial up to connect to the internet

- you could go through an airport without taking your shoes off at security
- gameboys were big, clunky and grayscale

- mobile phones were too big to stick in your back pocket

- your mom had to scream your name throughout the neighborhood when it was time to come home instead of just sending you a text (embarrasing when she calls you by your nickname, too)

- there was only one computer in your entire neighborhood (and the 3 or 4 surrounding neighborhoods) and it only had one game - hangman - that you had to access through a DOSprompt

I remember thinking that 3.5" floppy disks were epitome of portable file storage.

On a related note I also recall stopping a video game periodically to insert the next disk.

-boys being told off for lining up at the bottom of open stairs, so girls could

Playing track & field on a C64 or Atari400/800 (Had both) and shaking the joystick that later became practice for something else...

Having to load a game from a cassette tape for a Commodore Pet / Vic20 - and that took 15-20 mins!

9600 baud was super fast compared to your old 2400 or 300/1200 baud modem.

Blowing on the game cartridge before playing a NES game...

Riding in the back of a pickup was considered cool - and no one cared if kids did it.

6.5536mhz crystal and a certain item from Radio shack was a neat "toy"

Baiting via Postal mail with a Nigerian prince took weeks.. (okay, I never did this.. but we did get a letter once!

Cassettes needing pencils to get them rewound
Come to think of it, my first computer needed a cassette player!!
Gently nudging a "skip" out of a record with a safety pin
Sewing machines at school
Typewriters and changing daisy wheels to get a different font
Stove top popcorn (although I hear you can still find it)
Untangling phone cords and inevitably seeing a hairpin turn in the middle of the loops and wondering how on earth it got there and how I would get it out
Wandering the world unsupervised with no cell phones or GPS

Get off my lawn.

(Bonus pints if you can name the game.)

Commodore C64 was the bees knees, PC with 20Mb of hard drive was huge.
Late night entertainment was watching the little white dot on the telly fade away (from about 1" away)
