My oldest personal mail account receives a ton of spam, but rarely scams. Odd, right? That changed about two weeks ago when I started receiving loan lads, lotto winnings and tons of inheritances. Today, I receive this:

The Home Depot has discovered that a file containing your email address may have been taken during the payment card breach we announced in September. The file contained email addresses, but it did not contain passwords, payment card information, or other sensitive personal information. We apologize for this incident and for the inconvenience and frustration this may cause you.

In all likelihood this event will not impact you, but we recommend that you be on the alert for phony emails requesting personal or sensitive information. If you have any questions or would like additional information on how to protect yourself from email scams, please visit our website or call 1-800-HOMEDEPOT.

Again, we apologize for the frustration and inconvenience this incident may have caused. Thank you for your continued support.

bware, I got the exact same notice on 11/07. It's true about the breach – my daughter's husband had to cancel the credit card his business uses at their local Home Depot because of it.

If you've ever given your email to a Home Depot, it's legit. If not, it's no doubt a scam. Home Depot released a statement saying the same thing on the news, etc.

Notice that it doesn't ask you to click on anything! Another pretty good sign that it's on the up and up.

^^^I'm well aware it's on the up and up. I gave that email address many many years ago.

My point was, I rarely saw lads before to that account. Yes, spam advertising, but not scams. Now, I'm seeing tons of it so the the email addys are out there for the scammers and being distributed.

We probably shouldn't be surprised. What is surprising to me is that my main personal/business email hasn't seen an increase in either spam advertising or scams lately.

Bware, I concur on the sudden increase in scams as opposed to spams, and I also received the Home Depot email.

So... I suspect we may suddenly all be baiting the same lads from our newly energized spam catcher accounts? Laughing
